Highlands Ranch

Highlands Ranch

A Poem by Jerome F Knox III pseudonym Nefarious J. Dorsey

There are no combs
In my home
I am happy that my hair
Is dreaded and nappy but
In Highlands Ranch
The fact that I am also Black
Is one of the reasons why
My neighbors don't offer
Me an olive branch
Nor do they care that
At my door the need
For racism to recede
So equality can begin
Is a farce that sparks
Nothing in their hearts
But empty debates
At Starbucks
As they are forever
Stuck with the entitlement
Mentality that everyone
And everything is beneath them
Like anyone and everyone
Should reach out and touch
The hem of their
Lord and Taylor garments
Which to them means
They are better than me
Because of their cars, SUVs
And their money
Makes them think
That they are more superior
As they think that I am inferior
Believing gentrification
Placed me in the situation
Where I now reside
As the hatred overflows
From the inside to the outside
No they don't offer me
An olive branch in
Highlands Ranch
Then again that same
Mentality trickles over
To Southglenn
Where
Suburban housewives
Park their overpriced
SUVs behind me
As if there destination
And time is more important
Than mine
Maybe because my
Mercedes Benz
Is black like me
So that is why
The church won't
Say Amen
In Southglenn
There are
No set a sides
No free rides
That is what they
Think when they see me
Despite being an engineer
In the DTC and serving
In the military
No they think I am not
Deserving
Cause they are self absorbing
Pompous asinine
A******s with closed minds
Who think that because
I don't own a comb in
My home
That there's no need
For them to give
Me an olive branch
In Highlands Ranch
And that is why the
Church will never
Say Amen
In Southglenn

Rico, I may be the only white guy that's never been to Starbuck's and never owned an SUV (even a USED one)(kidding...) but I was fortunate to have been raised by parents who taught us color blindness at a very early age. And as far as wealth goes I've been much more on the low end of that scale and having the affluent a******s looking THROUGH me. So I can identify with at least THAT part of your write. Now with all our hatred aimed at fundamentalist jihad Muslims some of us brush away the fact that homegrown racism is still extant in this country...in other words the KKK just quit wearing their hoods in public. So at least we (white folk) are not ALL ignorant, and I am not making fun of you at all. I just want you to know that I feel for you, not having grown up shouldering all that racist weight and volume; I pray for all who have. take care...dan
