Morning News

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

Too much saccharine with my morning java...

"

Good morning, Brittany!

Good morning, Ted!

In the news today,

Eighty-seven are dead!

An inferno, an accident,

An attack unsurpassed…

Now here’s Joe

With the weather forecast!

Thanks, Brittany!  Today,

There’ll be clouds with some sun,

Now here’s Beth with the traffic,

Won’t that be fun!

Good morning at home,

And thank you, Joe!

There’s an eight-car pileup,

And the going is slow!

Here’s our high-tech chopper

For a view that’s live ~

Look at that mess

On I-95!

Now back to the news desk ~

Brittany and Ted?

Wait’ll you hear

Which celebrities wed!

That’s all the news is,

A candied word-fest

Giving no time

For our minds to digest

Afraid that emotion

Would make it too real ~

God forbid, we allow

For the masses to feel

Yup. That's pretty much how it is. And the sad thing is - most of us slurp it up without thinking because if we thought - we'd step up and change it. Impressive write. Biting and intelligent. Well penned!

oh did you capture the morning news perfectly...and how can they talk about disasters and 8 car pile ups with a smile on their faces...

"100 people died when a building collapsed earlier today in Seattle...and now Jim will tell us whether there will be rain to ruin your picnic lunch on this Memorial Day, Jim??"

it is so like you expressed.

Yep. Crazy, isn't it? Thanks, Jacob!
You have captured the essence of a real newscast perfectly, Rita. It's so much bullshit. Here in Atlanta, it's no different, they try to make it all about them. So much so, they even make news up, if it's a slow day. And everything they report on is embellished to make it more of a story than it actually is. Then they get in the faces and homes of the suffering victims to make it look like they care. When all they really care about is ratings. Your poem says it all. Humor and honesty, you do it so well.

I've always found it ironic how the news always starts with "Good evening," then proceed to tell you all the not-so-good happenings in our world. I like this piece quite a bit; that first stanza not only drew me right in, but also combined wit and humor with impact-fulness and reality. Great rhyme and rhythm as always, and a sentiment is displayed that I can certainly sympathize with. Great work!
