Platitudes

Platitudes

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

Literature is the orchestration of platitudes. - Thornton Wilder

"

Nothing to fear but fear itself

What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger

Buying these trite sentiments

Makes moving on take longer

Time, it heals all of your wounds

Good things, if you just wait

So we should just sit idly

Not affecting our own fate?

Everything happens for a reason

Always darkest before the dawn

Said in times of hardship,

But joy and hope, still gone

It does not help to hear these words

Our spirits not emboldened

When you are at a loss for words,

Try this one: Silence is golden

This is a beautiful poem, but I would have given it a six syllable cadence if I had written it myself. Here's an example that's close in meaning to your first verse. This verse has six syllables in each line with all accents matching in meter. I overlapped rhyme. You may keep this verse as your own. I won't add more verses because this is your brilliant poetic idea, and not mine. You may sing this verse as a song: (Perhaps I should write songs instead of poems?)

"Nothing to fear but fear."
"Hardships make us stronger."
Quoting words filled with cheer
make us cope much longer.

I like this. It has good rhyme and rhythm, whilst still saying 'something'. Nice blend of word and meaning, and especially the last line, woven nicely into the verse. The rhyme comes across unforced, which is not the case in lot of rhyming poetry.

Thank you for reading and for your kind review.
Guilty as charged, I've fallen back on plenty of these when I've wanted to support someone, and can never come up with anything better to say.

I think we all do this. I was thinking that there are times when they just seem hollow. Thanks, R&B.. read more
First I liked the thought from Mr. Wider. Your powerful lines had resulted in a great poem. Your rhyme scheme was wonderful.

Thanks!
Platitudes
With Attitude...

I love it!!

Next time I am tempted to fall back on one of these trite cliches, I will remember our Lovely Rita, and pray this little prayer...

Dear God:
Please put Your Arm around my shoulders...and Your Hand over my mouth!!

I loved these lines, they speak such truth. "Good things come to those who wait," Ha. :) Sometimes I agree with that other times I dont. I think you have a really good write here, that speaks volumes.
No one could have said it better, Rita.

I know, right? It's something we all do.

My pleasure. x
Platitudes are some kind of gloss people put on reality.
