will-o'-the-wisp

will-o'-the-wisp

A Poem by Rogue

Through gently waving rows of wheat
and on down the path I have chose
The sun recedes and the night awakes
in the distance a bright flame glows

There, twirling feather light in the dark
a ghostly beacon that calls to me
Feet now wandering off through the stalks
to appease a growing curiosity

Solid ground gives way to marshy bog
each step sinking deeper in the mire
Fingers reach out to close only on air
swallowed up in this fated Fools Fire

Such a symbolic walk. The fools, fire, a will o the wisp. The feather leading all make up a ghostly walk through thoughts.

Wow. I was not expecting that ending and very much like the surprise. You had set me up with a beautiful visual of a rustic night and then....
But it also strikes me that it is a lovely metaphor. We see the beckoning light and fixate upon it little seeing the dangers we are led into. Be it the wrong dream, a hopeless quest, or a tall brunette [never mind the last one].
Very nicely done. Thank you for sharing this.

I missed this one, Rogue! My favorite author is Diana Gabaldon. The Outlander series. Anyway, it is set in Scotland before the American Revolution. This brings to mind the villagers belief in fairies and Ghost Flames. They will lead you astray, off your chosen path if you are not wary of them. Beautifully worded piece. I enjoyed it very much!

Chris, your ability to read through all I write never fails to surprise me. :)
I can take this in different ways : Chasing an illusive dream , fate or even a death end. You have penned a gorgeous poem full of great metaphors which relates to deep concept on life and humanity condition in general.
I like : the rows of wheat...through the stalks...a ghostly beacon...solid ground and marshy bog...fated fools fire .
You latest writes are on the level of masters of poetry...:)
