An Hour Past Midnight

An Hour Past Midnight

A Poem by Rudi J.P. Lejaeghere
"

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary. Edgar Allan Poe

"

It’s about an hour past midnight

with many shadows and almost no light,

the cold, cold bedroom is closing on me,

I don’t know if it’s real what I see,

but my fear is pounding in my heartbeat,

all I hear is the clicking of my teeth

or does the sound come out of the wall,

I guess maybe it’s nothing at all,

just a bad dream they call a nightmare

and still I’ve got this feeling of despair,

that nothing will save me now from this threat,

how hard I pull the sheets over my head

the outcome has already been written,

once it takes you and once it has bitten,

all the present will then be the past,

I just hope, it won’t take long… at last.

Am enjoying your poetry to music and sound effects, Rudi... it is wonderful to be able to put a voice to the words.. .this chilling piece reminds me of walking to and from my grandmother's house when I was younger and the village was without street lights of any kind... the dim light in windows cast their beams but a few feet from the glass and the space in between her house and mine - less than a few hundred feet - was always haunted... no doubt, by my own fears and far too many ghost stories... well-done, my friend.

mmmm, love the way your read, Rudi....perfect inflection....this would be perfect around a bonfire, in a lonely woods, deep into the night....
that poe-ish feel, hauntingly beautiful but bringing chills.
