A Winter of Memories

A Winter of Memories

A Poem by Sally Hope
"

You only miss the sun when it starts to snow ...

"

 A WINTER OF MEMORIES

The roses are dead. Crystal snowflakes

Adorn the abandoned home we lived in.

I stop by sometimes, to gather the pieces of my life,

And contemplate if I could've made it alright.

MAY:

When we first met, our hearts did not race.

Yet our eyes did get drawn to each other's face.

The summer wind blew; all around arose anew:

The only broken dolls were me and you.

JUNE:

You - oh, why? - were the only thing in my mind.

The raindrops fell, but I flew high.

Touches were soft, kisses were grace.

The distance was closed - our hearts raced.

JULY:

The world welcomed us, and we welcomed the world.

The nights were a harmony, the days were a blur.

When the glorious lights lit up the night sky,

I saw my tinted images reflected in your eyes.

AUGUST:

The late summer wind blew in the dust and leaves.

We pretended we were still in bliss.

Holding hands; nonconformist stands;

We were treading on unmapped lands.

SEPTEMBER:

The first time I cried; the first time you lied;

The first time I let the roses die.

The autumn onset turned the green leaves red,

And I uttered the words that I'll always regret.

OCTOBER:

Autumn brought tears, and incarnation of our fears,

As the unwanted, unasked for, inevitable neared.

I saw the leaves fall, I heard the last call,

I gathered the letters and the broken dolls.

NOVEMBER:

When we last met, our gazes never scraped.

We neither felt love, nor any hate.

The November nights were the loneliest time,

But the tears didn't fall - my eyes were dry.

DECEMBER:

The roses are dead. Crystal snowflakes

Adorn the abandoned home we lived in.

I stop by sometimes, to gather the pieces of my life,

And contemplate if I could've made it alright.

Author's Note

Sally Hope
My first attempt at a love poetry (though it turned out to be sad in the end because, you know, I'm terrible with happy endings!). Hope you like it. Suggestions would be most welcome.

The reality is there are less happy endings than sad and I would rather read a sad believable ending than a far fetched happy one. I liked the monthly format and the emotion was real and engaging. There are on guarantees of happiness in life, it is what you make of it and are willing to invest into it so I find your poems ending perfect :~)

There's something about repeating a verse that gives a poem a profound meaning to me. It's like coming full circle...and I know I've done it often.

The pendulum sway of each month gave its hue in great detail...there was nothing to do but fall in love with its delivery!

You're welcome. You're such a talented writer!
LOVE. IT. !!! *claps* I love the structure, how it goes from side to side. Also, the different colors give it a fun, playful outlook. Other thing I like is how you repeated the first lines at the end. It works really well here. Also the fact that each part is a month... Well.. Yeah, there's nothing I don't like in this poem! Really good job, keep it going!

Thanks for taking the time to read this :) I'm really glad that you liked it.
loved the how you assigned each month with memories that seemed to be threaded with a bittersweet happiness and regret; progressing with a measure of time and seasonal rhyme... the opening and closing lines give the work great emphasis and lead to being an unforgettable piece of writing. there are subtle notes of healing within these poetic verses, nicely done... also, the perfectly placed hues of color for each month was a feast to the eyes and they made the impact of each occurrence that much more intensified...

I like how it's structured. I hate that feeling when the roses die and the dreams are futile. Nicely written.

Amazing, I love the way the stages of love match up with the seasons and weather in the months. My favourite line is :"The summer wind blew; all around arose anew:
The only broken dolls were me and you." - the imagery is so powerful and beautiful, I just love it.
It really represents when the bloom of love fades so does the colour and the life around you. Very emotional and poetic. Keep it up :D x

Love the progression..stasis story catharthis denouement return to stasis with the repeat of the beautiful first verse.

Gorgeous with the colors picked with some pupose and meaning for the months...really striking word use.

A moving gal meets guy love story...

Love and wishes for a calender full of racing heart....

Thank you so much, Jen :) It truly means a lot that you liked it.
A wonderful and poignant dance through the seasons of life and love. I think the beginning and end repeating works really well for this piece and I love the line "The only broken dolls were me and you".
So much of life and love summed up perfectly in such a short space of time, just like life can be. We never see the changes coming until they are upon us.
