Should Have Brought BatteriesA Story by Scrawler'sSecret“Come on, come on!” I muttered to my self as I started smacking the flashlight against the palm of my hand. “You can’t die on me now.”
The dim light flickered and struggled, but it stood no chance against the heavy velvet of the darkness. I jiggled the switch and rattled the hunk of plastic in a panic to shake some life into the tired old flashlight.
I could sense the thick black fluid creeping in from the corners and closing in around me. I could feel it beginning to climb my legs up to my chest. I was getting crushed under its weight. Each breath I tried to take turned out to be no more than a gasp for air.
The flashlight wasn’t even flickering now, it was no use. If I didn’t get out of there the monster would have got me for sure. I turned on my heels, shoved my way out past the mothball-laden sweaters back to the safety of the light. The monster in my closet wouldn’t dare follow me into my room; after all I have my night-light on.
I was careful to close my closet door after my escape. The dim light in the corner of my room was probably enough to keep it away, but better safe than sorry. I crawled into bed, curled up under my sheets andwas about to nod off when I heard a small pop. Everything turned to black and shadows crept in along the walls. I could already see it seeping in from under the closet door. There was only one thing for me to do.
“MOM!” I screamed. Right away I could hear her slippered feet shuffling down the hall. When she came in I didn’t even have a chance to explain what happened because she was already giving me her usual speech.
“I’ve told you before there is no monster in your closet. You are too old to be using a night-light.” She plucked my night light out of its socket andset it on the dresser.
“Goodnight and I promise you there’s no monster.” Then she left, closing the door behind her.
I dove under the covers to hide but then it hit me. Did I really think that my blanket could keep me safe from the monster?
Only a soft and fuzzy wall stood between me and the monster. I couldn’t see it but it was out there, lurking among the wooden block buildings and toy cars, pillaging the miniature city. I bet it could smell my fear as it slid along the ground searching for me. How long would it take for it to find me? If I stay under here it will have me corned. But if I come out it will see me for sure... and then what.
My only chance was to make it across my room to the light switch. I peeked out from under the corner of my blanket and spied my goal. The distance between me and the switch spanned for miles across the landscape of my bedroom floor. In the dark I couldn’t spot the monster but it was down there… somewhere.
While formulating my plan I could hear my bed faintly creaking; the same squeaking it makes when someone climbs into it for the night. The blackness was climbing up my bed post. It found me and now it was coming to get me, my blanket could only hold it off for so long.
The monsters head slithered across the ocean of my bed spread leading its ships and fleets across the sheets to a new victim. The victim being me. It was now or never ifI hesitated a moment longer, I’m a goner. It had almost climbed to the edge of my blanket I could feel it weighing down on top of me.

I jumped down from my bed and ran, my eye fixed on the goal past the closet door on the other side of the room by the dresser. Almost there, I was so close and I reached as far as I could. I could feel my finger tips brush the cool plastic of the light switch as I tumbled to the ground. There was no hope now; it had me by the ankle. I pulled and tugged but it had me and this time it wasn’t letting its dinner go. I stretched out my arm reaching up to the elusive light switch, but it was no use its spindles had me held fast wrapping tighter around my leg climbing slowly upward, torturing my nerves.
I looked up to the ceiling praying to be saved. Only a miracle could get me out of this. I didn’t know whether to give in or keep struggling. My eyes darted around the room until I spotted my Superman poster hanging on my ceiling looking down at me. I remember begging Mom for weeks to hang it there. He was always just Clark Kent but when he put his cape on he turned into Superman! Nothing could hurt him not even the monsters and villains that inhabited his city.
That’s it, that’s how I’ll make my escape. Mindlessly I reached for my blanket and fastened it around my neck. I focused my strength and with one hard tug my foot came free. I stood looked it strait in the eye; facing it for the first time, its eyes shining in the dark. No more of this running and just hoping for dawn to come. I dove at the beast. Its fingers wrapped around my body but I tore away from their grip. On the floor we wrestled knocking up against the bed and dresser. I guess we made quite the noise because I didn’t even hear my mom come in.
