Me and Tom Sawyer

Me and Tom Sawyer

A Poem by S. S. Allen
"

*if you've ever been cheated on.*

"
Love was empheral,
Needless to say,
I cavorted into it deeply,
Slowly,
go slow...
Stop!
I didnt want to.
I didnt know too,
that hurt would ensue.
Half spent sessions, telephone calls and writing letters.
I was stoic as i waited...
But all would abate quickly,
The moment you began seeing her.
The walls I had for my defense
You ingeniously broke them down
Layer by layer by layer
Then when you had let yourself in
You built them up again
Ensuring a way of escape for yourself
That was how clever you were,
Tommy Sawyer...
That Saturday afternoon when you sat me down
Your lying lips quivered ,.
"You did nothing wrong, I did" you said
& I knew what...
I knew that,
You cheated.

Your poem creates and extends a gut-wrenching emptiness and pain that one can only imagine if not experienced. And, for those who’ve lived it, it’s a word painting burned in the brain.
