always wanted to be Anita polishing her apple cakes

always wanted to be Anita polishing her apple cakes

A Poem by Shirlena

sometimes you just want to be the girl the men are gawking at

'Neet know she got it gravy

all the fellas tongue’s wiggling like little street sweepers

the one’s who prefer drawstring head covers

with proper creases yellow stitching on a rough dark sheen

men writing just to spell her name

actually even white collar and Argo in navy dress pants

ask around to inquire where she disappears to

once she has exited their limited frames

must be the deep trench in her back standing upright

five inches supporting her heels

the way they make the bottom pendulum

when she isn’t moving

below middle of the spine pops

males discern what Anita is saying without engaging her mouth

when she converses easy petitions are granted

understanding it’s just a matter of slick adjectives and minutes

requirement for improv has swiveled out of gates

and so I internalize envy appreciate the prospects

of being understated

do it Anita…

and your apple baum

Love it. Though I have to ask: Did A Tribe Called Quest inspire this poem? I'm pretty sure it did, but I just want to make sure. You have definitely captured everything that they sang about into a perfect poem. Great job and great descriptions. And if it wasn't inspired by the song (which I'm listening to right now lol) still, fabulous job. I really liked it and I look forward to reading more of your work.

For me, this is about a woman who is sexy and smart, without being overtly so, and in so being, she is enviable. I know women like this, and they have a unique quality that is to be admired. I like the form and the style of this poem. I would love to hear you read your poems, with the linguistic variances, it would add to the piece.

I know a few also but they weren't all awful...just stupid in the matters of heart and attraction
Not my favorite poem of yours, but I like how you write with maple syrup in your mouth, making you talk funny and what not. Your cadence is all jazzy and I would prolly swoon, if I knew quite what the heck you were saying. My bad, my bad.
