A Parent's Words

A Parent's Words

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

Why does your hair look like that

You need a cut

A style-

What is wrong with your clothes?

Your shorts are too short

Your shoes are too tall

Why have you dressed that way?

You know your child is not really

your first born since you were not

married when you conceived.

Yet, you look beautiful today.

What is that on your face

a zit

put this on it-

wash your face

now you look like a raccoon

see how your mascara runs

such an animal you

appear to be

to me-

pull yourself together

what is that you are wearing now

is that someone's curtain

go change your clothes

present yourself well

in this family

we don't tell

what happens behind

closed doors.

Be quiet.

lines from mommy dearest...lol kids need a lot of encouragement and confidence boosting, tell them they are great and they will become great...love and patience are the keys...they need room to grow...and attention to detail but not clothes and dress codes, its silly the things some people think are important

I'd be willing to bet that there are a lot of homes like this. So sad, but a nice write.

This is the picture of my parents alright. And I might as well become one without even realising it.

Yes, I think parents treating their children like this wouldn't make them strong, quite the opposite. You point with this to all those being treaten wrong way. But I think, everything is kinda chain. The parents did it the way they were able to do. Great writing, Siddh.

Sounds kinda like my parents when I was about 6-7-8 years old. It reminded me of this one time I was trying to get dressed one saturday and my mom decided to randomly critique everything I wore. "Oh those don't go together...now you're wearing too much black...blah blah blah." Years later, I started going to school with ammo belts draped around my waist, a studded leather jacket with rancid and dead kennedies patches safety pinned all over it. And to this day, I wear way too much black. Great logic mom. I get the deeper theme of this poem, how parents try so hard to put up a front as to how perfect their family is, yet worse things are going on within the house. As Jekyll and Hyde says, it's all a facade.

I have to agree. Most familes have at least one parent who is the picture of this poem. The rest have two. lol Poor souls. We have so many people who cant make a decision on their own because they did all their parents said to do or only see themselves in their parents eyes. I say each child is an individual and parents need to treat them as such. Great poem. It really hit home.

In my own opinion, all families are like this. They like to have their privacy that is why they don't tell things out of their homes. Though, there are times, as human beings, we cannot suppress the feelings that we have that we tell our friends what is happening inside the family circle. Pretences, maybe or maybe not. Maybe the parents are just protecting their children from certain disappointments that they experienced in their lives. I am only but a daughter now but sometimes I also try to empathize with my parents.

This is a great work on describing how parents act in front of their kids. Great job. :)

This had such a cutting feel, and the last sums up the pretence families go through to put on a face
in public, the constant putting down, belittling, such a sad thing to read..........and sometimes I
wonder if parents do it purposefully, or not.
Sad.
