Dark Cravings

Dark Cravings

A Poem by SleepingDragon

A gift of tears liberally shed

The earth bids you farewell

A most unseemly obsession

For one of fairer flesh

We all have our dark cravings

Fantasies never to see daylight

Depraved urges haunt our minds

Begging us to indulge them

Their song is ever relentless

Ringing within each of us

Delaying their gratification

Seems to embolden desire

Are these but parts of ourselves,

Or rivals of our pure conscience?

Antagonists of virtues we strive for

To better ourselves and others?

Perhaps they’re pieces of the whole

No different than our physical parts

Ever present shadows since birth

As part of life as breath and food

Yet indulging their whim is immoral

In our sight, and that of society

The lesser evil is mockery, derision

The greater imprisonment & death

For some, it is their nature

Unyielding as a fortress

Unrelenting temptation,

Their true face, no mask

For others, it struggles

For dominance in their life

An affliction never desired

Impulses they do not crave

Like darkness, they are constant

Eternal night for vulnerable minds

Yet passing into light of the sun

For the ordinary who walk the earth
