The Horse

The Horse

A Poem by Zachary Jude

Fall off the horse, get back on

Easily said, not easily done

Step one will be the easiest part

Cry, yell, and mourn your heart out

Step two is tricky, though far from the worst

Find someone close and express your hurt

Step three is bad, it goes downhill from here

Reach out to your lover despite your fear

Step four is terrible, you’ll need to be strong

It’s done and over, though your love lingers on

Love is illogical: it twists and conceals

Your love is unwanted, so it’s time to heal

Step five is the hardest, and you’re already sore

But step five is repeating steps one through four

For how many times? It’s hard to say

Your care only deepens, it won’t go away

But step six is the scariest, and also the last

Mark each passing memory as a ghost from the past

Ghosts are precious, tragic, and beautiful, too

But they’re stuck in one place, always haunting you

And that horse I spoke of? Still it waits

Despite what your ex does, this isn’t a race

As for me, I’m still stuck on step number five

But the horse is still with me, right by my side.
