The Prettiest Girl in The World

The Prettiest Girl in The World

A Poem by John Dennis Gillespie

His arms embracing her, she weeps into his ear with tears that stream like waterfalls of lost hope and despair, and she asked, "Am I still pretty?"

He smiled and said, "As pretty as can be."

Sinking in her sadness, she wished to disappear, away from all who stare because they couldn't understand her terror, but he was still there, and she asked, "Am I still pretty?"

He smiled and said, "As pretty as can be."

Reflections of her car collision rippled sinister thoughts of doubt, she begins breaking out and breaking down, and when she relaxed, she always asked, "Am I still pretty?"

He smiled and said, "As pretty as can be."

The lonely nights created suicidal thoughts of grief when she laid in her bed sheets and stared at the misery on her walls.  Her eyes closed more and more, now, she's walking in the dark, she asked, "Am I still pretty?"

He smiled and said, "As pretty as can be."

She would die to feel elegant again and, he still held her close as a true and dear friend, grasping her hands when she asked in a trance, "Am I still pretty?"

He smiled and said, "As pretty as can be."

"Am I still pretty?" She repeated like a chorus, and he looked deep into the eyes of this thinning, young girl.

Then he smiled and he said, "Believe in what I've been screaming.  If your heart stopped breathing and your eyes couldn't pearl and your legs couldn't walk and your arms couldn't hurl, you would still be the prettiest girl in the world."
