The Jolly Doll Maker

A Story by Desiree O'Neal

              The Jolly Doll Maker

My family and I lived in a small town where everyone knew everyone if something got out to one person within a day or so it would be around the whole town. There were no secrets...as I look back on this I don't know how I missed it. I was 17 at the time and I had small siblings, who in most cases wasn't enjoyable most of the time. They were always outside or playing at a  friend's house, I hardly seen them until they came inside and ran around yelling. One day I didn't hear my little sister come home at the end of the day, I didn't think much of it, maybe she wasn't feeling good and went to bed early or something. My mom asked where she was and the boys all said they didn't know and that the last time they seen her was about an hour ago. My mom went out looking for her but didn't find her so she called the cops. They looked at her and said that maybe she ran away my mom looked furious and she wanted them to do there job and find her child. My mom stormed out the door mumbling to herself. (i'll find my own damn kid) I started to get worried about my little sister with her only being 6 years old. I checked in the house to make sure she wasn't in there and went outside to look for her, I went to all the places she normally goes that I knew about. I didn't find her anywhere but I did find some blood in the treehouse she used to play in. I ran to find my mom to alert her about the blood. When I found her she got the cops to look for her daughter the right way this time. About 3 weeks pass and we still didn't find her, we all sat silent in the room she used to sleep in. my mom wept and dried her tears on her sleeve and turned to ask me,

Mom-- Will I ever see my baby again? Is she hurt? Is... she d-dead?

She started to tear up again as I went to hold her, I didn't want to cry to, I wanted to be the strong one for her. As time went on (about 4 more weeks) we all tried to move around her, as if she was still there, mom kinda went insane. The boys missed there sister as well, they didn't really know what was going on. All they knew was that they couldn't see there sister again. I remember the cops saying that they did everything that they could at our door and slowly walking off. I went to my room for a while before coming out to look for her some more. There was no way I was ever giving up, so I went into town to see if anyone had seen her before she went missing, someone had to of seen her somewhere. I walked past a store that was pretty popular in our little town. It was for  dolls to be made and sold. Everyone always had questions about the store because no shipments would ever come in for supplies but they always had spare body part…..I went in to see what kind of dolls that they made. As I walk up to the little black desk I make eye contact with the man behind the desk.

Man-- Hello, how can I assist you, or should I say build a beloved buddy, this is where we can make you a life size doll of whoever you want that passed away, just give me a (mumbles (picture of the little girl…)who you want me to build.

Me-- uhh no i'm just looking..can I see a life size model

Man-- why certainly you can.

The weird looking man walks to the back of the store and about a minute he comes back with a life size doll of someone…..it almost looked exactly like the woman down the streets daughter that went missing 1 year ago….

Man--do you like her, she's a beauty isn't she (giggles) she was easy

Me-- easy? What do you mean

The man clears his thought and restates his sentence.

Man-- it was really easy..to make.

I look at him with suspicion. I run to the back of the store when he turns away.

Man--come back here you fool.

I continue to run and not look back. When I reach the back I look around to see if he had anything to hide, he was looking to suspicious back there. I didn't see anything at first but then I seen a freezer so I pulled it open an I screamed. I was mortified from what I seen. There were body bags all over the place, I went to run away and I ran into that man again so I pushed him down and he cut me with the knife in his hand. I ran all the way home and told my mom what I had seen. She called the cops and within 5 minutes they were there in front of the building. They yelled in the building to surinder. He comes out with his hands up crying and saying “dolls made me do it.” they arrested him they told us they would let us know if they found anything while they investigate. A few hours pass and the knock on our door.

Police man-- we are really sorry but the body of (their child) has not been found.

Me and my mom both looked at eachother and i say “then where is she….
