Revenge of the Nerds 2009

A Poem by Here's What I Say
"

Won't be long, mark my words, the time has come for revenge of the nerds.

"

Prologue

Someone had to watch it. It had to be at least one person in the class. That way, if one person saw it, whoever saw it could pass on the message to the rest of the class. It shouldn’t have had to be that way; everyone was supposed to see it for themselves and make up their own minds, but the class felt it was better if one person did the work and allowed them to reap the benefits of the knowledge afterwards. That’s what they had been doing, haven’t they? Classes for generations before them had. Someone had to figure out the Pythagorean theorem, and it was in their math books so they didn’t have to do it themselves. Someone before them figured out the mechanics of the English language. Someone wrote down history. Someone wrote down everything the Catholic Church wanted them to know.

How much better and beneficial that someone among them, one of their peers, to find out something on her own and to share with them?

                                                *            *            *            *

It was rated R
So perhaps it was something
I shouldn’t have had to see as
A child

As an adult
I know why I sympathize
With characters now
Anyone who is the centerpiece

I sympathized for different reasons
As a child
Maybe the nerds were more fun
And a lot nicer than the popular people

It was a warning. Of what was to come.

I was Edward Cullen
Before Edward Cullen was
Sylvia Plath and I shared a commonality
When I was only nine

The boys crossed their fingers in my face
Like I was supposed to melt
To their disappointment
There were crucifixes in each room

I hated each and every one of those boys
With the same passion that they teased me
What I hated about the girls were not their cruel words
But their traitorous silence.

Each day
Their fangs
Sank deep
In my ears

Lewis Skolnick
Is my soul
I even hated
My own name

They’ll never understand
Why *NSYNC
Seventh grade
With the number of perfection

Justin had my right arm
JC had my left
Lance had my right leg
Joey had my left

Chris held the mirror to my face

I didn’t need a Homecoming rally
To announce how proud I was
I am
A nerd

Lewis, Gilbert,
Wormser, Arnold,
Lamar and Takashi were shocked to find
A baby on the Lambda’s doorstep

Two years later

They made me ashamed
Of my own family
Even though under their care
I became this lady

Don’t mistake Gilbert
He’s John the Baptist
Warning you of
The coming

It’s only a movie
They all say
It’s only an exaggeration
Of what is really true

My goofy smiles
My random jokes
The poking
Were actually screams of triumph

Your recognition
In the yearbook
Means my legacy
Is unforgettable

Now
In black and white
I will live forever
After your blood sucking habits

I will live to tell
That the revenge of the nerds
Didn’t happen in 1984
It was only a warning

Only a glimpse into the future
Of what was soon to come
Of what enemy
You helped to torture

In order to create

The revenge of the nerds was born
July 3rd, 1986
She lived to understand oppression
The day before freedom rang

I came out more beautiful
After the biting
Than Edward Cullen did
My life dazzles me

So I pass on this knowledge
After this excruciating high
That

I AM THE REVENGE OF THE NERDS

And I lived

to

expose

your

lies.

Whoa. This came out more "Lady Lazarus" than I predicted.

hahahahah.. this is so incredibly great it's almost indescribable. this is like my book now except good.. for crying out loud, you can't give me one moment without you blaring it through your talents that you're better than me? hahahhaa. good job. so entertaining. the beginning is perfect, and the poetry is dark and humorous all at the same time. really really good.

Wow. I'm blown away. This is piece is brilliant, from each and every reference to the emotion of the character. Amazing work! You've summed up the basic feelings of anyone in schools today who are lower on the social ladder because they're smart.

......I'm guessing all these people you mention that I haven't heard of are from this *NSYNC thing you mentioned?

Aside from me not getting the references, I really enjoyed this. It's a very accurate reflection of what anyone cursed with intelligence goes through. (Which is really ironic, because guess who the populars will end up working for?)

Awesome. My daughter is eleven and a second generation nerd. She's got an "I heart nerds" t-shirt that she absolutely adores.

And I remember high-school. Even though it does seem like a long time ago. And I remember the way that I never really fit in. It was so much easier to stay lost in a book than join in the insanity of the popular kids. I am pleased to know that the time is near ;)

I like it. May we all learn something from it. Never would have thought of Booger as a god. lol Brilliantly thought out. Kudos.
