A Poem by Kayla K

A new study has been done, showing the link between depression and insomnia. Did you know 40% of Americans experience depression, 10% which is chronic? If you believe you experience any kind of insomnia and/or depression, check out this article.

*This poem talks about self-medicating and prescription drugs. Please know that I do not support self-medicating in any way. If you really think you have a medical condition that can only be helped by taking some kind of drug, please speak to your doctor as soon as you can. Drugs for insomnia, such as Lunesta, Ambien, and Silenor can all be provided by doctor's if you do in fact have insomnia, and, if you have depression and insomnia, anti-depressants can sometimes be needed.*

"In it's early stages, insomnia is almost an oasis in which those who have to think or suffer darkly take refuge." ~Sidonie Gabrielle

Insomnia illustration
Dandelion depression
Buy up all my feelings
in the disease auction

Trying hard to sleep
Mind numb, body weak
Incapable of expression,
feeling like a freak.

Pop a sleeping pill
Add it to my bill,
of all my other sins.
I'm ready to give up
I lose, depression wins.

Pills just make it worse
Try alcohol, or drugs
Anything to destroy
these insomniac tugs

Blurs of color,
spinning through the day.
Trying to get some shut eye
in a depressive ballet.

Pillows and blankets,
stacked up high.
Listen to soft speaking
midnight sigh.

Chronic insomnia,
is what the doctor's say.
Prescriptions will lead the way
to a bright new day.

Sleepless nights,
disappear.
Every day
becoming clear.

Lunesta pills
help through the night.
Don't be embarrassed,
for it's alright.

Try some Ambien,
to help the depression.
Studies show no abuse
from this medication.

Trouble staying asleep?
Silenor could work for you
Blocking histamine receptors,
you'll sleep all the night through.

Solutions not working,
antidepressants it might be.
Depression could cause
your insomnia army.

Self-medicating
is far in the past.
All these prescriptions,
can keep you strong,
steering the mast.

I love how you capture insomnia and the horrible nature that comes with it. A lot of people self medicate. I will tell the truth. I like Nyquil for nights that I cannot sleep. More people than you think do it. It's like you get to the point where you are willing to do anything to get the sleep you need and when you do, you still feel as you can sleep for a million more hours, and that is where the depression plays in. The two together are a deadly combination waiting on their next victim. This poem was great.

One of your best. Clearly cut and well written. Each word represents a crystal.
