Evolution of Self

Evolution of Self

A Poem by Mariana Silva
"

Interpret as you please, though I worked very hard on this piece to illustrate a personal evolution

"

No one listens to her desperate pleas,

No one has the patience to lift her up and embrace her broken body.

Too few words, too many faces, too few embraces

She lives a life ruled by numbness.

Holding out on all affection, life plays a tease.

Happiness, love and pleasure; these feelings she wishes to embody

In the hope of saving all the various people regardless of races.

If only in her mind, she knew sarcasm from sincereness…

She grows cold and lonely,

Staring at couples, feeling a pain deep within her soul.

She’s alone and without someone to teach her what love is,

So she slowly begins to resent those happy people.

She loses faith in someday finding her one and only.

Feeling like she’s fallen into a vortex without control,

And she’s been abandoned by all people.

Holding out her hand to the world,

She pleads with people to consider what they have done,

And find it deep within themselves to forgive.

Regardless, people walk on without a glance.

Feeling that her good intentions have been unfurled,

Her only chances undone, one by one,

She gives up, feeling she has nothing left to give.

And then…she met someone…by chance.

Unchanging, she became bitter and angry.

Her smile hid the malice that lay just under the surface.

The darkness in her heart was slowly consuming what remained,

Leaving barely any reminder of what she used to be like.

He gazed upon her, wondered why she seemed so desolate and angry,

And yet to others, she seemed so calm and happy, but only on the surface.

He tried angering her further, try to get her to drop the mask she has feigned,

Between them, something began to grow and it was not dislike…

She changed, she became more open and he finally saw the scars others had left.

He tried convincing her that she was worth respect and love,

But she denied it all.

She just wanted to know him better and forget…

She made him realize that all the years he had been angry were because he was bereft.

Even so, with her, he felt as if he had more than enough love.

For a while, he ran away from her and her love, ran from it all.

He was scared and just wanted to forget…

Eventually he returned to find a new girl.

She loved him still,

He felt foolish for running but he was glad to have her back.

They were once again friends.

He felt that he loved her even more for this new girl.

She was self-conscious still,

But, she felt stronger and told him how much she had wanted him to come back.

Even so, she wanted to avoid telling him, that she wanted to be more than friends.
