It's the thought that counts

It's the thought that counts

A Poem by T.S. Ulmus
"

The most romantic poem ever

"

It's the thought that counts

I bought my love a lotus flower

with perfect leaves and petals

it smelled of sweetest honey

but then I ate it whole

I bought my love a gilded ring

it shined with glitz and luxury

then it (accidentally) fell down my throat

was totally not my fault

I bought my love a little ferret

smoothest fur and cutest whiskers

that one is actually made of meat

anyway, he was probably a jerk

I bought my love a box of chocolates

I feel like you know where this is going

sorry for eating all your stuff

This made me giggle.. I love it!

.. maybe you should've bought her a couple sandwiches first, then the cute ferret might've been safe!

As one who has scorned love & romance poems at the cafe for 6 years, I'm delighted to see a spoof on the whole myth that there's anything like perfection in the pursuit of love & romance. Humans are banal & self-absorbed -- they often make love all about oneself. This, to me, is the brilliant symbolism in your poem. The narrator is making this whole romantic pursuit about himself & he does it so adorably, it's like he knows she will think he's being SO IRRESISTIBLE! . . . in reality she thinks he's an a*****e -- again, the true beauty of this poem . . . the irony . . . this guy is gobbling down his chances of snagging this lady in the long run! But then again, many women put up with a ton of crap from guys like this, so maybe my interpretation is way off kilter (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Ha, this poem made me smile. It started off with such loving thoughts and they somehow waned. It must have been his fault, you did use the word jerk. I have to confess I have been like that in the past with chocolate, except him indoors can eat it all now because I found out I was intolerant to dairy. Some would say that was just desserts :))
