THERE WAS A TIME

THERE WAS A TIME

A Poem by Tanya7

There was a time, not long ago
A place where golden crops would grow
I lay beneath a willow tree
Where grandpa used to sing to me

The grass was green, no orchard bare
The flowers bloomed with grandpas care
The sheep would graze, all free to roam
A place to truly call a home

As quick as taking shallow breaths
The home I loved fell upon death
Strangers raped each weed of grass
Scattering remains of glass

The sheep no longer hummed a tune
All orchard in consuming doom
My grandpas tune a distant song
Faded away, and now its gone

I drag myself through broken grounds
Remembering the strangers sounds
And sit beneath that willow tree
The only comfort left for me

You used imagery very well in this piece. For a second it was like I was in a life that I havent ever been in and for a poem to do that to the reader you knows it better than good... its great!

Loss of innocence. A piece of childhood gone. It's a feeling everyone's felt, yet few understand. It's like it has to be some sick sign of maturity to "get over it", yet some of us never do. It's good to see poems like this. It reminds me of my own past that's quickly disappearing thanks to strangers moving in on old houses and places I used to play, and this speaks to many others who know the sting of such things. Few poems like this get written, and I'm glad to have found one.

This is brilliant.
Your imagery was beautiful and for a moment, I lived a life that I never truly experienced. I can see the grass, flowers, sheep and willow tree. I could feel the peace these things brought to me. And then it just got really sad. lol Everything changed and all you have left is that same tree. This poem is really somber and lovely. The rhyme / flow are some of the best I've seen in a while. I'm plesantly surprised. :)
