Beyond Enough

You call me your beyond

Beyond beautiful

Beyond intelligent

Beyond exceptional

Beyond an entity of imaginable light

Beyond any prayer, spoken aloud

or from within

Beyond all which love

could ever hope to be

And you make me know

I am beyond by

loving my being

beyond your own

 

But,

you’re

not him;

and his is

the only love

I’ve ever wanted

All I’ve ever known

 

He loved me enough

Enough to call it love

Enough to say I was his

Enough to be enough even when

Enough was too much for him

I was never beyond

Beyond his women

Beyond his liquor

Beyond his friends

Beyond his veiled persona of perfection

I was never beyond acceptable

Never beyond a lasting moment

and never beyond him

loving my being

beyond his own

 

Beyond is incomprehensible to me…

an inconceivable abstraction

of blurred fallacies;

a foreign dialect

adapted by few tongues and

unintelligible to those whose

ignorance shelters them from a

concept they weren’t predestined

to know

Beyond is an unconditional notion

tainted by the one

who came before you

a notion I’ll never understand

and one I could never conceive

 

So, I’m sorry

I can’t be with you

I could never

love you beyond…

beyond limitations

beyond an idea

beyond myself

only enough

Because that’s how

he loved me,

that’s how

he showed me

how to love,

enough

My father

loved me

just enough
