Mother Machine

Mother Machine

A Poem by T. Greyman
"

Become the products you buy. Inspired by Regina Spektor's "Machine".

"
A curvature in intellectual progress is here.
Mechanisms come alive through lethargy.
Comfort and relaxation has a cold steel exterior.
And the wires underneath are draining your will.

An emotionless voice provides our answers now.
Speaks only in algorithms and restricted logic.
And the stainless steel breast we rest our heads on.
Saps metacognition, enslaves and controls.

Computerized Earth for the computerized inhabitants.
Become the products you buy.
Without them, we lose all progress.
Without us, they lose their own progress.
Progress for the merging of mechanisms and organisms.
It's already begun.

How often do you use your phone, your computer, your TV?
How often do you use your game consoles, your Internet, your own mind?
All the answers to every question you could ever conceive are right in front of you.
The source of all Human knowing, implanted in technology.
Our greatest invention, unable to become undone.
Too rooted in our lives. Devolution is imminent.
Mechanism and organism are merging.

Raised by technology, the way of the future.
We provide the answers, not the limited organic mind.
Mother Machine looks after us now.
Humanity is obsolete, the virus is spreading.

A curvature in intellectual progress is here.
The way of the future.
Mechanism and organism are merging.
Humanity is obsolete.
Devolution is imminent.

The future is here.

I don't rhyme, too restricting.
Not hating, I do appreciate the art form.

Rhyming is restricting, however it can help to accentuate the meter of a particular work. That being said, it was not necessary in this piece. The rhythm was clearly defined. I'm a fan of Regina Spektor and "Machine," is a great song. This is one of those pieces where the premise isn't groundbreaking by any means, but is nonetheless compelling. If we took all the material in the world that wasn't based on a completely unique thought or emotion we would be left with very little. What is unique is an individual's perspective, and I want to thank you for sharing yours. It is one that very much mirrors my own. I can't help but notice the irony. You recognize the implications of our relationship with technology, and you seemingly have your doubts about the merits of that relationship, but here you are, sharing your thoughts with that very same "emotionless voice," as a vehicle. Here I am agreeing with you, and voicing my admiration through "Mother Machine." Very nice imagery. Very well executed. I enjoyed it immensely.
