If you have a green thumb like my late grandfather, you would appreciate these slimy night-crawlers contributions. Gruesome as these creatures of the dark may look and gross is the dirt they feed on. They are an essential part of our eco-system. We attributed our beautiful flower beds and productive backyard garden to their way of life.

In a symbiotic relationship between the animal and plant kingdom. Even obscured thing like this night crawlers has major role to play in the life cycle of another living things that impacts another creature's environment.

But what happens when people adopt the ways of these night-crawlers and project their lifestyle on another fellow beings ? The effects is not beneficial but rather destructive to someones surroundings as in the case of a talebearer or busybody.

When we, as creatures of the highest kingdom adopted the ways of a night-crawler who shows close affinity to dirt and project it in non beneficial way. We lower our standards of thinking and living by embracing the lifestyle, language and mindset of a talebearer, by choice and by association.

As a fitness guru always reiterated: " Who you are is what you eat and what you feed on is who you are."

By descriptive analogy, don't be like these night-crawlers who love and live for dirt. Their skin is sensitive to light so their deeds and actions are done for the most part underground, in secret, inconspicuous to the naked eye, behind someone's back.

Don't speak and spread dirt. Don't gravitate to the ways of these slimy creatures, nor the world they live in and on the things that sustains them. All they seek and know was dirt. It's a world they were born and accustomed. Its beautiful and tasty to them.

Put our mind and mouth in good use. Let us not go down the level of the worms when we feed and focus on the dirt and mess of others...

Nightcrawlers/earthworms have noble purpose for burrowing in dirt while talebearers have none except, perhaps, to spoil the reputation of others. This is interesting essay, Neil. However, I got a bit confused as the conclusion appears to be inconsistent with the opening statement. The opening statement pertains to the purpose and/or the significance of life of the nightcrawlers but in the end you pick on the physical attributes of the nightcrawlers to compare it with the talebearers. I must say that the nightcrawlers might probably cringe with this comparison for it is their God-given nature to dwell in dirt while the rumour provocateur or gossiper have the option not to speak or spread dirt. :)

You are not only reading this piece but also tilling it like someone who meticulously cultivates a soil. I'm impress with your observation and you are correct that I verge off a bit with my analogy. In this piece I am both comparing two different things, the world they live in, the purpose they were created and standards they're hold up to. The nightcrawlers is living up to its fullest and blossoming to where it has been planted or placed to live. It is doing what it's intended to do and in return benefits it's surrounding. The plants, farmers and gardeners benefits from its contributions and cooperation. The nightcrawlers by its own standard is a productive citizen of its society. If they have or given a choice to swap places with humans and trade living space and environment with us and will be given by God a higher intellect to know the difference. All of them will line up and it will shame us because not only they earn it but deserves it as well. For they have been faithful and obedient to the One who created them without any sign of rebellion or complaints. They live up to the expectations of the One who placed them there. They all passed with flying colors.

A person is created in the likeness and image of God. It was also given a Law and Command on how to live and conducts its ways. So the nightcrawlers has some freedom to burrow and live wherever it want. Humans have not only have freedom but liberty to choose and live what God is expected and ought them to be. It's a different standard. Almost always gossips are about another person. Never before in my life heard a gossip thats about animal or inanimate objects or plants. We find pleasure in another persons mess and dirt. Its juicy to talk about another person in a negative way. When a talebearer uses and unleashes the destructive power of the tongue or mouth. The effect is like a kiloton of nuclear bomb detonated on earth. The ground is contaminated with radioactive materials that no plants animals and insects grows and survive, sometimes for decades. When I used the nightcrawlers as to a talebearer is to show my reader the standard that we want to go down and lower ourselves, which is counter'productive, destructive and counter-intuitive. It doesn't truly benefit us either way whether we gain momentary satisfaction from doing it. The nightcrawlers ways and standards still holds up compared to ours since it benefits their environment and impacts the things in their surrounding and vicinity of influence. I guess, we all have our weaknesses... Thank you also for explaining. I am used to the direct to the point inverted pyramid style of writing (introduction/proposition, elaboration then conclusion) that i have forgotten the different literary devices, which you applied i this case.
