What Makes the World Go Around

What Makes the World Go Around

A Story by Mr. D

It's not at all what you think it is...or maybe it is...

People everywhere say, “Love makes the world go around.” That’s a pretty nice sentiment, isn’t it? After all, isn’t love many a splendored thing? In some circles I guess it is. But not this one.

But they’re wrong. You may THINK love makes the world go around, but that’s an erroneous and silly notion. Now if you want to look at it from a sardonic standpoint, it’s actually any number of physics related entities that make the world go around technically, but we’re speaking in the metaphoric sense.

So what is this thing that really makes the world go around? Money. That’s right. You heard me correctly. Money. People love it, people chase it, and people destroy themselves trying to have as much of it as they can possibly get. Why do I say this? I’ll tell you.

Name one thing in the world that doesn’t cost money. Go on, name one. Alright, we have air for one. Gravity doesn’t cost anything. If you’re a Christian and believe in God, salvation doesn’t cost any money either, and that’s always nice. Is that all? It’s about all I can think of. The sad fact is that money is a universal necessity in this world. You can’t survive without it. You can’t even LIVE without it. You can live without love.

Now don’t make a mistake and think I’m telling you to go out there and tell your family, friends, and other people you know that you hate them or that you don’t need them or, Heaven forbid, to abandon your faith in God because you think you no longer need Him in your life. No, I’m not saying that at all. I’m simply saying, you can live without being loved by people. You can’t live without money. Without money, you have no house, no car, no food, no clothes, no nothing.

Like it or not, you, me, and everyone else in this world that draws breath will always be a slave to the financial interests of someone else, be it the government, your landlord, your boss at work, etc. You cannot escape the constant need for currency, and people everywhere are aware of that. Why do you think prices are so high? Corporate greed. Sadly, and most truly, it is not love that fuels this world. It is GREED and self-interest. Don’t believe me? Go ask a wealthy person to loan you some money. See what they tell you.

Or better yet, wait until some natural or ecological disaster strikes, and watch those greedy people gouge the prices of stuff just to make a fast dime. It’s everywhere, folks, and not just where I live. It’s all over the world. Why do you think black markets exist everywhere? People will always pay good money for what they can’t get legally, unless they’re the thieving type.

People also ignorantly speak of “financial freedom.” Folks, there is no such thing. Even if you had no bills to speak of, you would still be a slave to someone, somewhere in terms of financial stability because then, and you can see it for yourself in highfalutin society, you’d be competing with other rich people and having an, ahem, financial member measuring contest.

Grease someone’s palms with a Benjamin and you can get some really nice things in this life. If you’ve got the cash, you can bet someone, somewhere has something to give you for it. Nice clothes, fancy cars, big houses, or a huge houseboat that sits out in yonder city marina can all be had for the right price. Love? Doesn’t buy any of those things. Is it love that motivates people to steal from others? No. Is it love that motivates people to kill other people for their money? No. Does love occur when a person defrauds someone on their taxes? No. Does love make the world go around? Not at all.

For if it did, and I’m about to break off onto a side tangent here, people wouldn’t murder each other, they wouldn’t lie, cheat, steal, or do anything else that is harmful to their neighbor. But they do. Know why? Because that’s the exact nature of mankind. Constant, unrelenting opportunism. People seek any advantage that they can get in life. Even I do it. Granted, I much prefer a hard-earned honest living as opposed to being wealthy and morally bankrupt. Your mileage may vary in that department.

So next time you’re in dire need of some funds, don’t expect others to help you out. They MIGHT, but that’s a big might. Most people just can’t be bothered. A wise man once said, “Don’t tell people about your problems. Half the world doesn’t care, and the other half is glad you’ve got them.” Love most definitely does NOT make the world go around. The world doesn’t seek love. It doesn’t even know what love is most of the time. It only has an incredibly flawed perception if it, and incredibly skewed priorities. The world prioritizes self-gratification and self-servient behavior, and greed plays right into that. So the next time someone tells you that love makes the world go around, you can tell them what your good pal Mr. D has told you today. Or they can read it for themselves here.
