One day

We were standing in the garden. The sun smiling down at us. 

“Life is beautiful isn´t it?” I spoke. 

“Wouldn´t you like to know.” they giggled 

“I haven´t been living these past few years. Have I?” I looked at them. 

“What do you want most?” they ignored my question. 

“I guess the basic needs of a human being.” I answered anyways. 

“No- not food and sleep or a roof over my head. 

That won´t matter once I find something or someone who will make me happy.” 

“So that’s what you´ve been dreaming of.” they looked deeply into my eyes, smiling knowingly. 

“Love.” 

“Life.” 

“Adventure.” 

“Yes.” I simply replied. 

“And when?” they asked. 

“When what?” I said confused. 

“When will you begin to live again?” 

“Soon.” 

“Very soon.” 

“You´ll have to say goodbye first.” they said sadly. 

“I know, I just need to think.” 

“Don´t worry.  

One day someone else will be your forever.” 

Tears started forming in my eyes. 

They walked away, without looking back. 

“I love you.” they said. 

 

I smiled knowing that one day, “I love you” would be a promise. 

And it´d be real. 

I love you.

I think her heart has almost died, but they (the angels or voices in her subconscious) are telling
her that she can love again if she would only allow that love to come in.
She is wrestling with that idea, wondering if it is safe...she knows what she wants but not how to find it.

You always find a way to make your stories so emotional and deep! This is truly so beautiful. I like to also think it's her guardian angel reminding her she'll get everything she needs in the next life. This is gorgeous and gave me the chills. The dialogue, the wording... The mystery of it all. I'd love a book full of your little stories like this, just to look at to get inspired. And your right, food and a roof over your head really do come second to love, adventure, and those things.

well .... your protagonist may be dead .. speaking with cherubs or something .. or she (I see her as a she) is with younger people .. maybe siblings or maybe even Faeries ;) at any rate .. she has lost something .. and needs to let go of it in order to live on .. perhaps those "giggling" people have died and she is saying goodbye to them .. or she has died and must let go of past life in order to continue .. be reborn as it were.... you've certainly achieved your goal of leaving it open ended .. there is framework needing sheetrock, paint and wall adornments .. challenged my imagination .. L4 I would not repeat "Haven't..." ... perhaps more simply "Have I?" ... i enjoyed the challenges your prose/story presented me
