The One who is Written about.

The One who is Written about.

A Poem by John Holmes
"

I am often asked to write poems about friends. So here you go, this one is dedicated to my friend Dani. I hope the imagery leaves an impression.

"

Their are some people who dance, and some who fence

and others who walk and sing.

and then their those who write.

but their is one who is written about.

One who is constant in the nature of the human pandemonium.

Her body with such allure,  is as strong as Oak.

yet as subtle and gracious as the new born river.

To see her dance is to see the dusk before the wheat field.

her hair, born of coils of Earthen beauty, like flowers and leaves

of the most beautiful forests.

Hangs like the vines of the great jungles

Her imagination is of fables and by gone days.

her passion a raw flame of creation.

her eyes, deep, surreal pools of Earth’s light.

glistening with wisdom and beauty

beyond the comprehension of the pandemonium.

If you were to walk the Earth before the first green.

you would hear her voice.

the Voice of genesis.

and what a song it sung.

calm and terrible.

like the ocean that bore us all.

She is the passion in your eyes.

the skip in your step.

the joy in your heart.

The Song on your Soul.

she is the whisper in the wind

you hear on the moonless night.

she is the soil in your toes

and the rain in your hair.

 If she clicks her fingers.

and claps her hands

and taps her feet.

you dance like a maiden in the new born spring.

She is the World and the Written Word.

She is Nature.

She is Mother.

She is Goldberry.

 This is she.

The one who is written about.

and she is everywhere.

Ignore my grammar and terrible use of homophones, because of my dyslexia I have never completely learned how to use them. I am simply curious as to whether you think i have any talent? like is this sort of poem even stirring interest in people? I get told by people i am good but it is hard to stomach. Thank you.

There is power that courses through this piece. I see your talent here. The thing that I'm learning though is that it's not enough to have a gift for language, for words. The real work comes in the honing of the language, the craftsmanship. And you have to read read everything you can get your hands on. You can get away with not having too much life experience by reading, read everything. And by reading great poets you begin to understand what poetic sensibility means, that composition of language that touches the spirit. You can't fake that, you have to learn that and practice it. With any craft it's about practice and learning the nuances, when anybody asks I say it's like a baseball athlete. You can be in excellent physical condition but if you don't understand the nuances of the game, the traditions, the rules and the history, and put in the time to build those muscles important to the game, it will be hard to reach the top of that sport...
