Sangre Indigena (Indigenous Blood)

Sangre Indigena (Indigenous Blood)

A Poem by Ricardo Ignacio
"

The Poem was originally written in Spanish, but I have translated it in English- it is basically describing the experience of how many Natives eventually became Mestizos due to rape.

"

(I am of indigenous blood, born in Sonora, in the belly-button of the Moon.
And the battle for me started when I was incarcerated in the crib.
The war doesn't end, I fight everyday, but victory will be mine because death is liberty)

(Yes, I am of indigenous blood, but I speak Spanish.
You all can see it, that I write Spanish, but that doesn't take away that I am a child of the Sun.
Mi Mother is the Earth, and since I was born she waits for me, and towards her I am headed)

(I am of indigenous blood, and well I speak Spanish, but do not think it is with pleasure, I will explain how it began...
It started with invasion, it started when Columbus made the choice of tossing my mother to the ground, and then raped her)

(I am of indigenous blood, but I speak Spanish, but do not think it is with pleasure!
Can't you see that I am a product of colonization?
Here you see me standing, traumatized from the fear of finally knowing who I am)

(I am of indigenous blood, and I say it with pride- I will show you who I am.
You murdered my brothers, you raped my mother, but here I am!
I bet you never imagined that I would survive the disaster, back there where you left me, but what a big surprise to see me here today)

(I am of indigenous blood, and everyday I feel it, I have that Great Spirit, it is running through my veins, and soon I will show you that my brown skin, the color of my Mother Earth will once again reign in her rifle terrain!)

(Yes, I am of indigenous blood! In a foreign language I am proudly yelling it.
But understand the reason first, so that you can finally see that this continent is my nest!)

(Yes... I am of indigenous Blood, and that you can never take away from me...)

It's really sad to see great writing go unreviewed..I enjoyed the mix of Spanish and explaining it in English...the message is deep about mix race. Thank you for sharing.
