Mansion on the Hill

Mansion on the Hill

A Poem by Trace

a love story

Mansion on the Hill

Whispering breezes blow gently

Through empty windows every night

Songbirds proclaim the morning

As they carelessly take flight

Years and years of toil

Working well past his prime

Giving all he had to offer

While they abused his time

But unbeknownst to most

He had carefully devised a plan

Of where he wished to retire

And one day he acquired the land

Miles and miles from nowhere

In the mountains of his dreams

Every weekend you could find him

Building his mansion by the stream

She forgave his fishing weekends

When he said he needed to unwind

For his job was so demanding

Though she worried where he spent his time

Then on the day he said goodbye

To the job he had held so long

He took his wife of fifty years

To her surprise he’d been working on

They drove and drove for hours

Then turned his old truck up the tiny road

He’d hauled in so many supplies before

But now she was his final load

For when he parked beside the stream

He said: “This is the mansion I’ve built for two

She took his hand as they crossed the bridge

With teary eyes she said: “I love you”

Whispering breezes blow gently

Through glowing windows even still

The songbirds proclaim the mornings

Round their mansion on the hill.

such a lovely story. The love of a hard working dedicated man is such a powerful thing to behold. What a blessed woman she is.
