The Polygamist in Me

The Polygamist in Me

A Story by Tracie Skarbo

I am wondering how much longer I will have to write and be free of the others droning on and on about how much time I spend without them.  How much time has been taken from them to serve my fingers and thoughts with no regard for their feelings and desires? This of course reminds me of the constant bicker of three spouses that I could do without.

Spouse one is sleep of course and I suppose he is the loudest.  Especially at four in the morning when I am still bathed in the lamp of my laptop, engorged on the newest chapters of my latest novel.  The next spouse is creation, who loves it when I am up in the wee hours of the morning giving him all the attention he requires.  He pulls from me ideas and stories, sneaky in his silence, lest I wake from my trance like state and realize the time.  The other spouse is free-time, that whom balances the rest of my life and buoys me from the depths of a one sided existence.  He is the one who tells me to get out and experience the sun once in a while, nags me about the lawn that needs to be cut and that the weeds won’t get rid of themselves.

It is not that I don’t give these entities, if that is what you want to call them, free rein you see.  I do and I think that I give them ample time, well at least most times. I have from time to time forgotten them, or forced their hand to the writers’ schedule, this I do not deny.  I am only one woman, and a writer to boot, so how could this not have been the case?  When so often I have felt the seduction of prose and been enveloped in creation, only to emerge many hours later, suddenly surprised at the amount of time passed?

I am glad that none of the spouses are in fleshes form for if they were I would surely have a fight on my hands.  These men in my life would be staring each other down and taking each others measure, while all the time circling and clamoring for attention.  As it stands now they still clamor, making an awful din, but it is in my head that they play tug of war.

If I am out tending to the yard with Free-time, Creation stuffs ideas into my mind until they are oozing out of my ears.  Hoping that I will run into the house covering my ears so none of the ideas crawl down my shoulders and hop onto the floor to its freedom.  He figures if he can just get me to the notepads and the laptop that is all that it will take to break my will.  Most times he is right.  When I am at the computer with Creation spilling ideas into fruition, Free-time baits me with nagging thoughts of the laundry that needs to be done, thinking that if he can get me out in the yard to hang the clothes on the line, I will see the wonderful weather and decide to get out for the long awaited run.

So here I sit yet again at the witching hour, with my warlocks.  One snores, one is happily silent while the keys are at play, and the other beckons my attention to the sleep I should be engaged in.

Such problems. But so far, judging by your output, you have handled them well.
And you are correct, in fleshly form it is a harder thing to handle. Especially if the fleshly one thinks that writing is just a wee hobby like gardening, that one can pick up and put down at will.
This would be a good feature article for a newspaper.
I wish Creation was stuffing ideas into my head the way it obviously does to you.

Squeeze me into that mix. I bring my own inspiration. I require very little time. And I'm certain I can warm the long cold winter nights better than they. ;o)

Interesting metaphors of the forces within you being your husbands. Very well written and keeps the readers attention.

Life is much like walking a razors edge... balance is very important... finding time for pleasure amongst all life's business, being independent while being a rock for loved ones... though a serious matter I found your analogy funny and therefore entertaining as well... the 3 spouse thing is very creative... good thing that aren't real cause you'd also have 3 more to clean up after cause you know the men aren't gonna do it.

I have an idea...let's go play in the woods, maybe watch the eagles fly, count the waves on the shore for an hour or two, see what you write about then...as for the spouses complaining for your time...well, make it one more...
