We Were Just Kids

We Were Just Kids

A Poem by James Mckay
"

just describing my little brother and I as kids growing up

"
South Texas in the 80's
Livin on an old dirt road
Just drivin' our folks crazy
Catchin' fireflies and horny toads
Burnin' ants with a magnifying glass
Staying up late at night
Runnin' from dad
Who whooped our a*s
Having roman candle fights
Playin the original Nintendo
Watching Saturday morning cartoons
Eating cold cereal from a bowl
Us acting like the Looney Tunes
We went to Sunday School
And acted up in Church
We thought we were being cool
But boy that belt did hurt
Mama was an angel
But daddy was discipline
We weren't hard too handle
We were just kids
back then.

Wow. Reminds me of...
Well it feels like a million years ago. Only, it's just a couple of decades back in time. This poem is a mirror for me though I grew up in Africa.

I used to get a whack or two as a kid as well. We accepted it back then as punishment for bad behavior. Then we grew up and realized there are other ways of doing things. A trip down nostalgia lane. I enjoyed the walk.

Ouch, I remember my dad and the sting of the belt...discipline...and yet
we pushed the limits...I was a child of the fifties and early sixties...
My dad would be yelling at us and my mom would be standing behind him smiling trying to make
us crack up...then my dad would say "You think this is funny?"
Those were the days, we were definitely Looney Tunes...
this poem is replay for me...love it.

wow, so much I can relate to thinking of my kids, much of what you have experienced my kids did also including the cereal, cartoons, roman candles, and the church behavior and consequence. We also raised our kids Baptist, I was a late in life convert to following Jesus at age 36. I also use a lot of rhyme in my work but trying to learn some new ways also. It's a process, but an enjoyable one. Thanks for the post I enjoyed the read. -carl
