Nature & Me

Nature & Me

A Poem by James Mckay

I sat upon a log near a bubbling brook
And just took a look around
The sky was a sapphire blue
Surrounded by some cirrus clouds

Across from me was a tall oak tree
A whitetail fawn laid in some buffalo grass
An Eastern Grey Squirrel was staring at me
While a cottonmouth swam right pass

A jackrabbit played near some cactus
A red-tail hawk was circling the air
Crawling on my arm was a prayin mantis
Several otters played without a care

Some red ants were marching in line
A grasshopper landed near the bank
I looked at the sun to see the time
As a beautiful red fox took a drink

Suddenly I let out the biggest sneeze
And all of the creatures just scattered
I begged them all to come back, "Please!"
Saying, "Why not? What's the matter?"

I heard this grunting noise behind me
I wasn't sure what was going on back there
Then I heard the grunt and breathing
That's when I knew it was a bear

Sweat ran instantly down my face
I couldn't show panic; I couldn't show fear
I surely didn't have any pepper spray or mace
I slowly turned and it was a baby bear

I reached down the pet the little guy
I said, "What's with all the noise and drama?"
Then I stood up and knew I was gonna die
Because oh sh*t, I forgot about Mama!
