SCARED

SCARED

A Poem by Rhayne
"

sounds in the night

"

A whisper

In the night

Outside the open window.

A gasp

Blinking of a sleepy eye

Like stillness of air

An unmoving willow.

Waiting with an alerted ear

Unblocked by the pillow

To be sure

Of what it hears.

Afraid to move a hair

The ceiling

The eyes do stare.

Heart pounding

Lungs holding air

It was from outside, was it not

This whisper so clear.

The door

It is locked.

The window

It is not.

You're welcome. I enjoy reading poems that put me on the edge of my seat.
Wow, does this create some shivers. Growing up without AC, I often slept beside an open window with one eye open, and this finely worded poem made me think back to those times. Most usually, I feared sounds that came from inside the house, but occasionally, there'd be that snort or growl coming from outside.

Ah, things that go bump in the night. Sounds that have no right to be there! Who lurks in the darkness
but intruders up to no good. How we wonder what the darkness hides . . . imaginations run wild. From the earliest days of humanity the darkness has threatened us with terror. Oh what bedeviled creatures we are!

A real chiller. Captures well the feeling many have had upon hearing sounds in the night. The terse delivery and the buildup made the reader experience what the subject was feeling. Had a "Telltale Heart" aura about it. Skillfully done.

Thanks for the concern, but I'm fine. False alarm, maybe? Not sure, but window is locked now.
