Millennial Centennial

Millennial Centennial

A Poem by VelvetPotato
"

Talkin' 'bout my generation.

"
Why'd you move to that Smokey state,
with the streets littered in weed,
isn't it time you settle, make a family,
and give up your self-centered needs?
you're just a millennial, from centennial,
and
lazy - unaware that trees,
are not the most important thing, in life,
grow up, vote practical - for the economy!

well you see, sir, while you're brainwashed by FOX,
and that tactful gent, O'Reilly,
I'm with the mountain and leaves,
getting high, not on weed,
but 300 days of clear, sunny,
and sixty degrees! with no humidity!

And yes, now that you mention,
I'm enjoying the booming and
blossoming economy,
fueled by - wait for it - the pesky trees!

And if self-centered is taking your time,
saving and establishing.
'til I'm fulfilled - in extremity.
then I will laugh, as you fume and blast,
and call me a little piggy.

this is quite good, Velvet.
a political statement that doesn't beat us over the head...truth in the poetry that lets us be high on nature, what's left of it.
and the play on smoky state...love it...
last line in third stanza i read as "until you hear it"
yes, that tactful gent O'Reilly....oh, really!!!!!!!!!
love the subtle sarcasm.....

To be honest, I wish more people in your generation (younger generations in general) would show us how things look from their point of view. I have an intense interest becuz I know I'm jaded beyond being able to dispassionately view the viewpoints. This poem has one secret that can possibly disarm the climate-deniers (or whatever we call those who don't care if we open up protected lands for exploitation or those saying some species go extinct & others are discovered, it's all been going on for millenia) . . . you state your point so gently, in such human terms, it seems this is what's needed to get those with opposing viewpoints to put down their raging defense of exploitation in the name of profit. See? This is what I mean. I start ranting, which is why my generation(s) need to shut up & let the younger generations say how this goes now. It's your world now. Sorry for the cluster f**k we're passing on! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I love the line about being high on 300 days of clear sun and 60 degrees. Whatever the complexities of our times, the joys of life will always remain simple and sweet. Well stated.
