Death Dreamer

Tonight I  lay me down to sleep

Thanking Lord for the roof atop this home,

heaven above, love in my heart,

And all shown around me

Jesus is close

Oh, now I must hide,

under my pillows, covered face

blankets, carefully, hide my torn breath

Soon to tell the creaked floor following,

That sharp figure,

It has no face, still searches for my awareness,

As long I can hold chained lungs

I stay alive

Curiosity stakes me,

With one slit eye I seek the figure

Stares to, that thing hears the creak then

Turning, to sleep,

Mattress it spring the figure turns head,

I know it does

Comes to my door but no steps more dare it take

Heart of mine now strung to life, soul praying to stay

The figure presence now even closer

I shaken though still

Thank heavens it continues en route to kitchen

Rattling cans  are as the figure circles,

Back upon previous trailing

Through dining, then living room

Head falling to live

steps their creaks come up,

repeated ever so

Midnight comes

as twelve pops on

That dull figure, I hear it step back to the basement, closes the door

This morning, now I may sleep

I lay my head, turning side

Clutching my bear,

Hearing his song

My little sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy

When times are sad…

Closing my eyes,

Awareness released,

nerves numb

I’m falling, fast, down a canyon or

Off a cliff

I jump awake,

Gasping for breaths, I know not to deserve

It takes five minutes or more

though I try to sleep again

A spider crawls in a web of the corner

roaches race from the edge against the ceiling,

falling, pouring on the bed,

blankets and sheets crawling

The wall empties,

I feel everything crawling

Jumping to the foot

I watch them disappear

Down to the last one.

Up, over, down, bump, through, gone…

Search the blankets flip the pillows

Watch the walls

And when it’s safe, I try to sleep

Kay Kay, my small voice barely echoes

There are no grammar or spelling errors in this, read it untill you get what I'm saying. This is, pardon how cliche this sounds, a true story. I know because I lived it every night when I was really little. I saw these things happen and apparently remember them pretty vividly. 'Stares to' is referring to when this figure I saw turned it's head back as if hearing something then always went before the sun came up. The different fonts red cursive font= what figure did, purple=myself, black=reality, orange= what I saw. The different fonts help make my story clearer to understand and closer to the original write.

I personally struggled to read this due to the font changes. It took me a while but I love it. You have great talent as a writer. (More talent than some PUBLISHED authors!)
Eventually I will check out more of your work, I cannot wait.
Great writing :)

While I struggled with the font change at first what a difference it made! This was immensely creative and I love the way you pieced this together! Thank you so much for sharing this!

Can relate to your piece but in dream state. Had to read it a few times to grasp it fully due to the font and colour changes. Really nice.

I got this right away... i lived though something like this (read my "My Heart I Fill With Love (story song)" i figured out the color change as well. However I really appreciate the explanation dare I say "key to unlock the secret" in your authors note.

OK now for the review, This was VERY cool. as someone who knows what you are writing about, I can tell the rest of the world (all those "normal" people) that you have NAILED this. it catches the abject fear you feel as you both hear and see this kind of thing that would scare the heck out of an adult, but as a kid, alone, in you room, you really are convinced you will not be alive in the morning.

You also do a great job describing the attempt to force your self to stay awake and catching yourself and snapping back to alertness (see my "Not the Man I Was (song)" i try to explain how I still deal with it as an adult (not the visitations but the now engrained sleep pattern) under the guise of PTSD from military service (something people understand better).

what is remarkable is that you put it right out there for all the world to see and if they don't believe you to bad for them. In my work I have played around the edges of it. I describe it in small doses and in ways I think others can digest.

I applaud your boldness, authenticity and honesty in this write. Well done!

I'll always relate to stuff like this, I had a lot of weird stuff happen when I was younger too, pretty much remember all of it. Scary.
Love the imagery too!

An absolutely wicked story told in poetic form. I like the way you color coded everything. I believe one hundred percent in the figure that played in your house. There are more things in this world that meet the incapable eye. Very nicely done.

Children who experience a close and personal encounter with terror and come out relatively unscathed usually always grow up to be the strongest, most resilient adults. They are also the most creative and daring when relating to others. You related the messages within this work very concisely and powerfully. The style (read between the lines, people!) is both unique and intriguing. KUDOS!

Why is it we remember the strangest things from our childhood? I had dreams like this one too; I've done my best to forget them.
