i just want to know what you’re thinking

i just want to know what you’re thinking

A Poem by Wendy Grace

I just want to know what you’re thinking.

How you feel every time we say goodbye
Every time I leave a room
Enter it
Capture your eye

I’ll give you my truth
Will you give me yours?
Every time we say goodbye my heart breaks all over again
Instantly missing you
Is a feeling I haven’t felt in
What’s begun to feel like a lifetime

The goodbye is never permanent
I know that
But the sting is still there
Sharp, quick, intense

I just wish I knew
What it is that you wanted
From me
All the things you’re too afraid
To tell me
I want to know them all
Just once
One moment of complete truth
No holding back
Me and you

And I know there must be a part of you
That is hesitant to trust again
Whatever you’re going to say
I feel I have something
Twice as intense
Hiding in the back of my mind
That I want to say, to you

One moment of being able to know
How you want this to end
Because the more we speak
Touch
Laugh
Listen

The more I don’t want it to.

But this doesn’t have a happy ending
Does it?
How can something so new
So undiscovered, unexplored,
Unaware, and unprepared
Feel so right?

I may not know much about you
But I’d love to know
Every little thing
About who you are

What do you want to know about me?
I’ll tell you anything
And you say you don’t have questions
But
I know
There are dozens in your head
I know
There’s so much that
For some reason
You want to leave unsaid

I just want to know what you’re thinking.

How much of your mind
I’ve wrapped myself around
How often I pop in your head
Unannounced
How you feel when I get there
Do you want me there?

I just
Want to know
What you’re thinking.

Interesting freeverse poem setting out the dilemma often faced when two people meet and niether expresses themselves openly for fear of one kind or another. I think the reflective, mourneful nature of this gives the reader a feeling of sadness for the protagonist.
