Pandemic

Pandemic

A Poem by DIVYA

Invasive, spreading fast
A virus on the loose, for eons
Leaping, as fire through husk
Gripping, as winter's chill in bones

Endless variants each
more crippling than the other
Mutating slyly, swiftly
One cover and yet another

The victims left blind, deaf
Mad, incoherent with pain
Sores septic, in and out
reeking now, then and again

Social distancing of no use
Just spurring on transmission
Virulence choking breath
But little hope of remission

Some rightly call it a scourge
Hurled from the heavens above
And yet there are those fools
That have always called it 'love'

This poem speaks volumes upon volumes. I say volume twice because I thought I knew what I was reading about until I got to the end. It's amazing how old words can be reused with new meaning, without fear or hindrance of being a cliche, like the words "pandemic" and "love", especially love. But it was really your emotion-filled that which showed that you really cared about the pandemic that made this read worthwhile for me. Powerful write. Tyfs

Wow didn't see that one
coming .great twist at
the end ..love can be
described over and over
in so many ways, it's
both the stuff that dreams
and / or nightmares are made
of ..love has been a pandemic
for eons; and eons to come,
poets will no doubt always
write of love...

Lovely poem Divya

As I know this poet lives in a country that has been especially hard hit by the pandemic, her testimony must be regarded as accurate. She pulls no punches here, giving a grim picture of the effects of the rampaging virus on its victims. She also offers no hope of relief. The last stanza is somewhat mysterious, though. I have heard Covid-19 called many things, but "love" is not among them.

Thank you very much for such a kind review. Glad to meet you :)
Love can be like a virus dear DIVYA. Some people feel it like a butterfly touch when it first arrives while others suffer cruelly as it disintegrates, leaving destruction in its wake. I'm sure many would be happy to be vaccinated to prevent the heartache and sorrow when relationships end :) Very clever use of metaphor here. Another fine write from your much admired pen. Have a wonderful day my friend.

Good to see you too. DIVYA. Checking in when I can. Busy with family matters at present :)
Ahhh, Divya! 🙃

Ya got me good this time … I love the creative mind that can so completely catch me off-guard, and just as I was thinking, "This doesn't sound at all like the Divya I know, writing about the same ol' Covid stuff everyone already has." And, sure enough, "BAM!"💥 ya got me.
I shoulda known this would be about, magic, some ethereal mystique, an anomaly of the universe, some deep philosophy, or of Nature's wonders, but what could be more intriguing to write about than life's all-time most rampant and infectious disease of them all … LOVE!

Brilliantly conceived and delivered, Poetess … I "L-O-V-E-D" every word, line, and verse!
Big hug for the huge surprise! ⁓ Richard 🍃

200/100 for this one … what fun! 🤪

how ironic ma'am! ".... always called it love" ...you set me up well indeed dear friend .. love can be all that pandemic madness .. no doubt about it .. wars fought over it .. families ruined .. finances lost and taken .. and it can warp speed into a terrible darkness .... or not ;) great read .. the stuff of poets says i!

Love as a pandemic culprit....very, very original metaphor, dear DIVYA! As most poets here would understand, it's a terribly invasive affliction, been around for eons and there is no way to avoid it....unless of, course, you join a convent or become a Buddhist monk on a mountain side somewhere! It's variants are always evolving and most often the outcome causes pain and emotional torment. Unlike our current pandemic culprit, most of us would avoid being vaccinated just to catch the love bug and feel it's euphoric highs. It's a twisted little virus, that thing called love. Your descriptions here are very astute and the metaphor itself extremely relevant to today and clever. One smart lady, Madame DIVYA, and a great poet, as well. ⚘
