Mount Kunanyi ~ The Climb

Mount Kunanyi ~ The Climb

A Poem by DIVYA
"

Descriptive

"

 This was quite a climb

You and me on a trail

endless, unmarked

Where rising pillars of rocks

stared us down from above
Where water sparkled as
crystal in the veins of bedrocks
And the scent of stringy bark

blue gum and beech

mingled with the smell of

dead, mildewed leaves

This was quite a climb
You and me alone

among wildflowers in the scrub

scented by damp mountain earth
Distant bird calls echoed

the hoots of wild owls

and screeches of wallabies

in a shaded, twilight valley

Twisting with the terrain

We plunged into an alley

of ascetic, alpine trees

This was quite a climb

up gravelled, paths gritty

Scraped by tangly bushes
We stepped on masses
of stone upon angular stone
boulders nestling in scree

As snakes rustled in

the cindered hearts of oaks

and caves carved out
by the hammers of

igneous gods angry

This was quite a climb
We rolled with the pebbles
some naked, some dressed

by peat and moss

brooks bursting on us
through stony clefts
and the Organ Pipes
those fluted columns in the sky
Leaning upon us

like priests in whitish robes
eager for us to tarry

This was quite a climb
up the Pinnacle Road

up the last tormenting bend

mind outplaying muscle

in our unsteadied feet

on a staircase to heavens

touching Mount Kunanyi
there the earth floated below us
 unfolding a dream

of clouds kissing the hills

softly as mist, for you and me

This was quite a climb

 somewhere near

the Derwent River Valley

I free-climbed 40 plus mountains in Europe and the USA. I dream of free-climbing the mountains in India. I loved the energy of the poem. To travel with someone, who love the journey. Would be our best days. Thank you dear friend for sharing the outstanding poetry.

much like "the road not taken"---we are dealing with a road that is quite difficult in life, but we can make it up this road, through this mountain...i really like the pebbles part...and the clouds kissing the hills.
The terrain gets tough but together we can cross it, we can rise to the occasions of life...and make it to the pinnacle...
Love this piece,
j.

dearest DIVYA… Derwent in Derbyshire England… I am learning in my Golden years … but please tell me… where is Derwent River Valley in your Poem. I can imagine some of your descriptions when I climbed a couple smaller Mountains when I was younger. They had a Lake on the Top where we went fishing.. in fact one trip was ten years ago. I love your way of describing your adventures. I am humbled by your Talent. Blessings of Thanksgiving. gently, Pat

Such a visual poem, Divya! Every line touches one of the senses as I read through it. Your descriptive talent has always been admired. You have a wonderful ability to pluck original words out of the air and feed them creatively in original lines. I do enjoy trekking myself, though living in the city doesn't lend itself to much opportunity. From your poem, it must have been a truly delightful experience. A wonderful read for me today. Well written.❤

Sounds like it was quite a climb!! Been there, done that, ate the cookie!

This is a wonderfully descriptive piece of writing; cataloguing all the sights, sounds and smells around you as you put yourself through both pleasure and pain on a gruelling trek. Love the description of the caves carved by the angry Gods, just one of many finely detailed lines here.

I agree with Coyote; to travel with a companion trekking into the wilderness, alone and far from civilisation purely for the thrill of the trek and the adventure is a damn fine way to enjoy all that life has to offer. It sharpens the senses and frees the mind from everyday things that are ultimately of little relevance to enjoying life. Congratulations on this excellent piece of scenic poetry and for taking yourself out of your comfort zone and into the heavens on Earth.

Fine writing, DIVYA.🌷
