Ode to Marriage

Ode to Marriage

A Poem by Zoe Jay

And so here it comes
This union of hearts and souls
Ready to be sanctified and declared
Made public, killed and then re-born anew
Stronger and somehow purer, or so they still say
Because we did it and said it and wrote it down forever

Marriage is an oddity
Or so it seems to be sometimes
It means so much and yet also so little
Just a paper… but it is also the entire world
I will take that walk both so lightly and so heavily
My joy is my certainty, certainty that makes it so easy

I have no fears at all
Inside me, I am already bound
Husband or partner, I chose this man
No paper can tie me tighter than my heart
And so I walk lightly to register my love for him
Knowing he is mine forever, marital status disregarded

We don’t need paper
We don’t need flowers or cake
We don’t need rings to make it real
Our love is grounded before we sign for it
It is real, it is solid, and so we can take it lightly
We’re just shouting out about what we already made

But still I go solemnly
As befits the truth of my love
For when I make those vows to him
They will be forever pressed on my heart
Cut me open and you will find them in there
Because when joy is forever, that’s a very serious thing

love this. perfectly describes getting married for me personally. love the use of heavy and light imagery.

this line especially, "No paper can tie me tighter than my heart" was just so beautiful.

also loved the idea of vows being found inside if the heart is bisected. :)

you write so beautifully. i've missed your words.

the second stanza is a poem in itself , this is an honest Ode to Marriage that underlines the meaning of commitment .

Power filled, well said words...
To comment on single lines, and disregard the others is disrespetlful to the poems entirety..so I will just say I like them all;
And also the way the poem is formed..I know it took some doing to get it this way..but it makes the poem progress better than if it were made with even line length...It is written like true love is settled on...slow at first..then taking a few steps further..retracting, then going forward again...
I enjoyed reading it.

THIS IS ONE OF YOUR BETTER POEMS.I also agree that we do not need the sanctity of marriage, for it does not mean much in todays society.

But this is no sugar coating so if i had to point out a way to make this better then I would leav alittle more to queston about the piece. You are direct and o te point.I like it alot though

:) if only for these lines this poem goes in my favorites list...indeed no paper ties tighter than the heart does :)

I guess there is a light and heavy side to getting married. The paper has no meaning unless there is a divorce then that paper becomes powerful. Aside from that marriage should be just as you posted. I think most start out this way and many drift in another direction. Still the idea of marriage can be just like reality if two are really committed to making it that way. What a sweet and beautiful write.

A very beautiful and romantic poem. Love is in the heart, the paper and ring make it official to the world. Your poem is so very positive on marriage and its so nice to see some people still regard marriage so highly and see its importance.

. oh my ... this is amazingly intense ... and immensely beautiful ... and i am amazed at the care given to the presentation of each stanza ... a rather thoughtful pen has written this poem ... a pen held by an even more thoughtful poet ... you're right ... we must never disrespect powerful symbols of emotional expression and we must take them seriously ... in india ... married hindu women ... where they part their hair ... be it a side parting or a center parting ... or right near the centre of the forehead ... near the hair line ... if they don't ... they wear a dash of sindoor ... which is a red powder ... ideally every day but especially on special occasions ... and when "happily" married indian women wear saris with a dash of sindoor ... oh my god ... they look so gorgeous ... because they mean it all from inside ... that's how this poem is ... it's gorgeous ... because it comes from some place gorgeous inside ... it's a stunning ode to yin and yang ...
