Ode to Now

Ode to Now

A Poem by Zoe Jay

For now there is a void inside me
But it’s a good void
It’s an absence of ouch

Because ouch has been there for too long
I welcome the void
The cessation

And I know it won’t last
So I try to preserve it
Try to hang in grey space

For, like the moment that your chemical high
Crests and peaks before crashing
Into oblivion

It hangs suspended
A perfect moment
Like a hummingbird caught in the hover

Like a crystal rain drop
As it teeters on the edge
Before shattering on the ground

Such is this moment, this perfect moment
Of oblivion, of nothing
Of perfect emptiness

This moment is…
The three seconds before the car crash

The lurch as the cable snaps

The sweet moment
They poison your veins
With morphine…

Look upon yourself
From outside in the void
And for a fleeting second, see truth, know peace

You can’t preserve this moment
You can’t enhance it, or dull it
You can’t spoil it, or share it

All you can do is live it
Knowing the wave is about to crash
Scattering emotions like salt droplets

Dispersed over a wide area
A mini catastrophe
Played out several times a minute

And you can’t stop your heart
Any more than you can stop the wave
From crashing onto the rocky shore

And shattering into a million pieces
A million pieces for the million thoughts
That will flow into your head

As soon as this perfect moment is done
Crashing into your consciousness
Like a flash flood in the desert

Or perhaps it will simply ebb away
As quiet as an injured kitten
Yet like the tide

Retaining power and grace in defeat
Saving the storm
To roll in again next time

But whichever way your consciousness cleaves
As you perch on this silent apex
This moment will be done.

My Dear Writing Friend,
As usual you have painted a word painting with masterful word brush strokes that cause the reader to muse for hours. As I sat before my fire with pipe in hand I relished the “absence of ouch”, as you have coined the phrase. And you were an a piece of this serenity, as I so love reading you poems and reflecting on them before my fire.
If I could grant you one wish it would be that you have many days with the absence of ouch as you walk the trails of life. And on the days you have ouch the God you know will give you the strength to get up just one more time than you fall. You my friend make me smile, thank you for the smiles!

great poem.....
it has that l.a style,
reminds me of other californian poets,
but with your own class of words...

The flow was great, it just fell from my lips like honey. Well done.

I like how your writing gradually got smaller and smaller as the poem progressed to help your words have more of an impact. You also had lots of nice imagery
