Dragon

Dragon

A Poem by A.W. Carl
"

Poem about living life with a chip on your shoulder- pissed off at the world seeking to prove everyone wrong

"

Other people call it a chip, this thing that rests on my shoulder

It is more like a dragon.

He is devious and crafty

Constantly whispering things into my ear about how the world views me.

I am always slighted, underestimated, and looked down upon

I am never strong enough, smart enough, good enough. I am never enough.

From birth, he has made his home right beside me

And established his dominion in my mind.

He makes me feel worthless, yet powerful.

I feel inadequate, yet more than capable.

The very fiber of his being seems to be lies.

Yet, nothing else feels more authentic and real.

I cannot know because he is all I’ve ever known.

My understanding of life runs through his eyes, I know no other lense.

I am enslaved.

He has ruled my life with an iron fist for over 2 decades.

I fear the unknown of life without him.

On my knees, I  beg for liberation.

Let go of me, you savage beast!

You pathetic creature, you seek your own agenda!

Let me be free!

As if I had a choice.

I realize

He is a part of me.

So instilled in my soul, entrenched in my heart. He consumes my thoughts.

We are two beasts shackled together.

There is no me without him.

So we journey on together

This potent, dangerous Beast and I.

A trail of rubble and ash mark the trail behind us

As we set the world ablaze

Excellent- your poem has expressed very well the destructive voice that undermines the confidence of so many of us. Personally I can identify with this strongly but perhaps strangely a manic episode I had years ago (and ediagnosed as bipolar) seems to banished the beast and given me more confidence. It has also released a creative urge which has let me write.
Thanks for sharing this significant poem

Alan

sometimes we feel like we are less, but we become less only when we accept we are. Keep up the good work

This purging write has everything at its right place, fury, anger and resentment. But still you can not ignore that strong spirit.
