3 Dreams

3 Dreams

A Poem by Alex Zynder

I don’t normally dream, and hardly remember when I do. When I do dream everything is in a haze

Not like being drunk. Not like searching through a thick morning fog

But like looking through a liquid window

I know I am apart from the fantasy

I know these ghostly hallucinations can’t hurt me

I’m shielded by my barrier

Subconsciously never completely trusting

This castle in the sky reality

But there is an exception to every rule of course

3 times I have dreamed of you in 7 years.

 For whatever reason

I remember them intricately

They seem completely real to me

You don’t have the restriction in my mind that everyone else does.

I wish that you did. Why don’t you?

I see you clearly, and you see me. I accept this vision absolutely

No window, no haze

If there were I couldn’t see your summer freckles

Or the green lining around your grey eyes

You still look at me with the same tangible yearning you always had

I don’t hesitate to hold you or kiss you

I finally sleep, and forget myself

In the first dream we fall in love again. I was 17

It was so real to me; it took that whole day to convince myself it wasn’t real

In the second dream, we spent a summer together at seaside. I was 19

I’ll admit, it almost broke me when I woke up

In the third dream, we have a girl named Hannah. I was 21

I actually looked around the room to check on her the next morning

Fate, I guess, had a plan the day I awoke from that last dream

We saw each other only hours later, the first time in years

I drove miles to see a friend, who asked me what I thought of her new roommate

still asleep on the old couch she had just moved in

For me, the “Dream girl” isn't a celebrity or the most perfect girl I have ever imagined

It’s you, who breaches the foundations, the restrictions, and protection of my convoluted dreams

Who keeps making me fall back in love back with her, every few years without knowing it

Who woke up on that day, and looked up at me as if you had expected me to be there
