Here and Now

How slow the moments go

In the dingy boat of hope that’s

Tossed about like driftwood

In an endless sea of woe.

 

Like a flirty mistress,

The horizon of dreams

Winks and waves, but

Slips farther away listless.

 

The mind’s restless eye,

This crafty telescope,

Spies greener distant shores

For which old ones must die 

 

Leaving us empty of joy

Here and now.

The here and now can at times be a most uncomfortable place. These lines paint a picture for me of a struggle with depression or loss. The going is rough and the horizon is a mighty long way off. I liked the metaphors you have used here Laz. The poem will be relatable to many of your readers. Never give up hope. Very nicely crafted it is as well. All the best.

Often, we project our hopes into the future, but that hypothetical day when all the circumstances align and magically make us happy never really manifests. The only reality is the here and now, but, because we want life to be a certain way, we escape into the past or to the future where the grass always seems to be greener.
