O, MY TERRA TERRA INCOGNITA!

Bat femme wings
Vleermuis vrouwtje vleugels

Boy...
Jongen ...

What does boy?
Wat doet jongen?

Boy-blue-jeans boy
Jongen-blauwe-jeans jongen

Blood read sun sinks in vest
Bloed rood zon zinkt in vest

White vest
Witte vest

Boy-white-vest
Jongen-wit-vest

Wings, wings from bough of ash
Vleugels, vleugels uit een boog van as

Whisper of cattle biting grass
Gefluister van vee dat in gras bijt

Heat of summer hangs in hair
Hitte van zomer hangt in haar

Flair of boy flare
Flair of jongen vuur

Watches bat
Kijkt naar vleermuis

Watches boy
Kijkt naar jongen

Watches, watches
Kijkt, kijkt

Deep in mind, all alone
Diep in gedachte, helemaal alleen

Huff of cattle breath on grass
Gebries van vee adem op gras

Suite of grass and write of moon
Suite van gras en schrijven van maan

Bat wings
Vleermuis vleugels

Boy sings
Jongen zingt

Live things
Levende dingen

Owl sighs
Uil zucht

Love flies
Liefde vliegt

Boy lies
Jongen liegt

Grass sighs
Gras zucht

Femme nighs
Vrouwtje neigt

Closer, closer, ever flies
Dichter, dichter, vliegt altijd

Eyes meet
Ogen ontmoeten

Both know
Beiden weten

Hearts beat
Harten kloppen

Would you nip my neck, a-bat?
Zou je mijn nek willen proeven, op-zijn-vleermuis?

Femme soars but to dive
Vrouwtje stijgt om te duiken

Would you give your neck, a-boy?
Zou je me je hals willen geven, op-zijn-jongens?

Would you taste my blood?
Zou je mijn bloed proeven?

Would you want me to?
Zou je willen dat ik het doe?

Tis dangerous!
Het is gevaarlijk!

I know, lie back
Ik weet het, leg je maar neer

Like this?
Zo?

O, moon-neck mine! Yes! Yes, sir
Oh, maan-hals mijn! Ja! Ja, mijnheer

No one sees us?
Niemand kan ons zien?

Our fantasy uneyeable out skips eyes
Onze onooglijke fantasie verjaagt ogen

Bat femme eyes!
Vleermuis vrouwtje ogen!

Boy her prize
Jongen haar prijs

~

Moon! Witness!
Maan! Getuige!

Bat wings o'mantle love
Vleermuis vleugels als mantel der liefde

Dark, darker
Donker, donkerder

Love envelops
Liefde beschut

Tassel moans
Kwast kreunt

Taste of...
Smaak van ...

What?
Wat?

Taste of what?
Smaak van wat?

Magenta?
Magenta?

Taste of magenta passion flute
Smaak van magenta passie fluit

Brush of lips rush
Borstel van snelle lippen

Slush of fears hush
Smeltende angsten zwijgen

Rush of life lush
Snel sensueel leven

Tip of tongue, tip-a-tip-touches neck
Topje van tong, tip-a-tip-roert hals

A kiss!
Een kus!

There is a-kiss!
Er is een kus

Another kiss
Nog een kus

O, kisses!
Oh, kussen!

Lips meet
Lippen ontmoeten

Kiss kisses kiss kissing
Kus kussen kus kussend

Lips part
Lippen openen

La!
La!

Tiniest of pin pricks
Kleinste speld prikt

Boy smiles
Jongen glimlacht

Bat moans...tastes boy...
Vleermuis kreunt... proeft jongen...

Boy strokes femme
Jongen aait vrouwtje

Talent flows
Talent vloeit

Boy to bat
Jongen naar vleermuis

Blood talent red flows
Bloed talent rood vloeit

Bat knows
Vleermuis weet

That first divine sip!
Dat eerste goddelijke slokje

Bat knows
Vleermuis weet

Boy smiles through femme veins verse
Jongen glimlacht door vrouwtje aders vers

A kind of pulsing poetry
Een stuwende soort van poezie

Which...
Die...

Bat knows!
Vleermuis weet!

Once tasted
Eens geproefd

O, once tasted!
oh, eens geproefd!

Once tasted...
Eens geproefd...

Smile at, 'can't go back'
Glimlach naar, ‘kan niet terug’

Can't go, can't go, won't go...back
Kan niet, Kan niet, wil niet... terugkeren

Not from this...seductiveness
Niet uit deze ... verleiding

Author's Note

A few days ago I mentioned to Orlando Furioso that his English original could well have been written in Dutch/Flemish. The author is aware that I was going to translate his work.
The audio file is a bonus: I chose to recite using a Flemish accent over a Dutch accent because the Flemish accent is softer to listen to.
I hope Orlando likes it. If he does not, I will take this down!

This is amazing work... my dear.. now the poem gets more weight somehow - different.. wonderful. I could learn with you Dutch.. fantastic.. I feel like Slovak and Polnish.. several words ...feels similar when one has a certain language intelligence right? Orlando writes such an abstraction and you really did a great job !!

Aww!! this was lovely! It took a few minutes to catch up to the words for me, but my southern ear soon warmed to the strangely, beautifully succinct word flow! Great work, Indeed, this is like hearing the soul of the poem, though it be in flemish/dutch (and who's to say all poetry speaks English, by the by? ) haha, this was a treat to read/hear lovely work friend Orlando and proficient Belgian writer!! ~P

I am moved by what you have done here, dear Belgian friend.

It was a strange experience for me to hear the poem read. A feeling which was compounded by it being in Dutch/Flemish. I can't stress how utterly fascinating it was to hear it in a different language also. I was totally captivated by the experience.

Now to the performance. Firstly, you have a wonderfully voice. I was taken with the sound of your voice as well as following the poem to see how it flowed in a technicl sort of way. You are very expressive and your voice sounds confident and calming. The way you performed the poem also captured its surreal mood. It was like listening to the voice of a dream, or the soul of the poem perhaps. I firmly believe poems should be read and write with that in mind. I do read myself, but not as often as I would like. Your reading here encourages me to do more reading. I think you gave the poem the breath of life. I thank you for doing it and for doing it so well, at least to my biased ear. Whatever anyone might think of the poem I am sure that anyone who hears you read this, or any other poem, will be enchanted by your voice. So BRAVO! A wonderful performance! Warm applause and, of course, profound thanks from your friend in England.
