Little av ye faith!

Little av ye faith!

A Poem by andrew mitchell

How ironic that man
continues to strive
to reach
the outer limits
of the universe
not in search of God,
but in the quest
for finding new life.

Maybe our faith
doesn’t reach
that far?

Maybe the
rubber band
that held our belief
got stretched
to the limit
and broke
the spell?

Many a prayer
has gone unanswered
where a prayer is
just wishful thinking,
and the wish is
no evidence
of anything
beyond itself.

I like the spirit in which this was written there is some truth to it. But also as a pragmatic thinker I tend to temper my expectations when it comes to the vastness of the universe. Life may not be what we expect it to be on other worlds or universes. It took billions of years for our species to evolve and so far our footsteps are only on the moon. We have only seen a tiny fraction of what is out there. And don't even get me started on what we are discovering on a micro level. There are dimensions we have yet to enter but know they exist. But because our mind and eyes can only perceive on a 3D level they are elusive to us. You are absolutely correct in that a wish is no evidence of anything beyond itself. This adventure in science requires us to think beyond ourselves and what we define as life. As your wonderfully thoughtful poem so eloquently points out. Sorry for the rant but I could go on and on about this subject because it has always held a fascination near and dear to my heart. I truly enjoyed reading your poem.
