Reeling in a line.

Excuse me! Where do you think you’re going?
I am a line, free verse. I can go where I want.
Oh no you’re not.
And who are you?
I am the poetic police
and I have you down as a sonnet.
A sonnet!
Yes a Sonnet!
But I like to wander.
Not anymore, fullstops
are in place as we speak
so you don’t do a runner.
I hate sonnets!

There was a time and a place a situation however brief when the sonnet was fresh and freeing to a language that has not kept pace to the sonnets needs and requirement, specifications. And as language users changed over time it has fallen by the wayside. I have come across some pretty interesting contemporary ones but the brilliance and elegance of English back then no longer exists in the tongues and minds of today's language users.

I agree the language was rich and lavish back then and has slowly abbreviated itself over the years of modernisation.

I don't mind a sonnet myself, but they do get notoriously 'wanky' over time with constant repetition. Flowers and Lovey Dovey stuff repeated ad nauseum do warrant being locked up by the poetry police!

A great poem for the Free Verse brigade here that burn all rhymers at the stake for being disciplined to form. Just keep the poetry police off our tail!
