If We Could

If only life could be as simple as it was way back when

 

If We Could

 

If our lives could be as simple as in a time of long ago,
Our world would be a much happier place.
If human weakness did not lead to the need to seek power,
If childhood innocence was the way of the human race,

 

If only love was as simple as give and receive,
If we all could say a prayer with the faith to believe,
If we could see into the hearts of our fellow man,
And find the love that God put there as only He can.

 

If on human hearts we could write our love,
Letters in the sand are not sent from above.
They are traced by the elements of the sea upon the shore
And as quickly as they are traced...
They are erased forever more.

 

As ever changing tides forge their letters in the sand,
They will be erased again and again...
Changing the message to come, but then,
They grow bolder, as change comes with time,
We find, that we can never go there again.

 

But Oh...if only we could.
