A mile in your shoes

A mile in your shoes

A Poem by Annabelle Lee

Waking up to the rain
Pounding on the window
And hoping and praying
That somehow she might know
You're thinking of her
Wherever she ended up
You don't know why it matters
You don't even know what
What you feel, what you think, how things ended with her
You google her anyway, because you want to know
You want to know what took her away
Why she had to go

You went through all the bullshit, too
And it begins to hail on you
You try not to think about it
But it hurts you so badly
You miss her so much
And you still love her madly.

It thunders through your system
When they talk about her the way they do
They don't know their negative opinions
Constantly stab at you
Trying to find the words to tell them how you feel
To tell them you want to know her
You want a mother for real
The one who's supposed to love you
And care with all her heart
The one you were bonded to
Nine months before the start

And lightning strikes
When you realize
That you're brave enough to ask
But you look into their eyes
And it hurt them
Why could you even think
That you could have the best of both worlds
You can't do everything
Your life's so much better now
Never hungry, your own home
But you don't understand half of yourself
Even with your friends you feel so alone.

You try your best to keep the hurricane at bay
But one of these days it will break away
It will ruin you
It will take over your scene
I know what will happen
It's happened to me

And all of these people, when the storm passes through
Will tell you that they're all here for you
But what these people fail to do
Is realize that walking a mile in your shoes

Is like walking five miles barefoot through hot desert sand
Broken glass, melted lava, uneven sharp land
And when the rain
Relieves the pain
It turns to hail
And you start again
And you have to get used to the blistering cold.
The erratic climate changes begin to get old.
Your feet are bleeding, blistered, frostbitten
And you try your best to keep them hidden
But somebody will try to come strip off your shoes
But it's your job to tell them what they're getting themselves into
