Character

Character

A Poem by Tate Morgan

Bernie Sanders

.

What makes a man's character

are built of actions on life's field

Not from the size of his body

nor of the power it may wield

The traits that we adore in them

what we all wish that we could be

Sown from seeds of imperfection

and that handsome humility

Rising again, time after time

drawing on strength all but gone

But oh what lofty heights indeed

for us to place our laurels on

I've always felt that a man's character directed his actions rather than his actions directing his character. Good character will produce noble actions while poor character often produces objectionable actions or even criminal activity. But to quote Daniel Webster. "What is a single man and all the good or ill which might befall him when compared to the great transactions of a nation. No man may suffer too much or fall too soon if he does so in defense of the constitution."

Hey Tate, Long time! Nice write. Short, sweet and true! I would add that a man's character is represented by not only his actions and traits (the visibly manifested and most tangible markers) but also his feelings, convictions and beliefs, which may or may not be fully demonstrated by his actions and superficially observable traits! But considering that those (perhaps less evident) factors influence and color the more observable actions and traits they may not be as significant in the overall analysis of the man!

But wouldn't it be sweet to have a glimpse into those unrevealed factors? Who knows what would be revealed! On the other hand, maybe maintaining society's fabric is more prudent! ;)

"Seeds of imperfection" and "handsome humility" are understood by few, Tate, especially in politics. If only our nation's leaders believed your poem and demonstrated they understood the power of embracing imperfection and humility.

I once read "character is what you do when others aren't looking." I'm not sure that's practiced or understood in this social media culture today. Your poem shines with wisdom and sincerity.
