Salty Slough Blues

Salty Slough Blues

A Poem by barleygirl
"

Elkhorn Slough is down the way . . .

"

Elkhorn Slough does a rippling rendezvous
where Moss Landing soothes a junky jetty
jutting toward the expansive Pacific blue
and ruddy anglers pull up beside pilings
to dock and offload cavernous icy chambers
of iridescent flippers, heaving the day’s catch
before a plump hazy peach plunges way
faraway where the skyline sidles the sea.

A corner of crimson canvas trim skitters swiftly
by floating gangways of gracefully bobbing masts
as bellowing blubbery seals do a pier pile-up
serenading the top marine sanctuary on the planet
buoyant otters crack clams on tummy trinkets
sea turtles paddle atop tons of tiny plankton
flushed from the depths of frigid aquatic canyons
tantalizing gray whales that migrate offshore.

Outside Phil’s Market perched on a weathered rail
I take a break from slinging chowder and cioppino
her fearless stride advances in salty faded jeans
long caramel braid wags thick as her arm waves
with her Bottlenose Baby buttoned up for nightfall
now she’s blowing in on a dreamy breeze of mine
so I slip inside to splash a long island tea over rocks
her faithful retriever wagging my welcome with
comfy slippers for my master . . . my Molly.

Those were the days, my friend, the good ole days
that ended in dusky flirtations upon enchanted glances
before protracted slow dances inflated my chances
but how could Molly know when I never told her so
before setting sail from the slough that final time
wonder where she went, how her days are now spent
comrades say my pining is passe, adrift by the bay
it’s high time to let the pipedream float away
time to focus on slinging calamari day after day
perched on the rail, I still await her crimson sail.

Beautiful Crimsin sail- the sights of wildlife and seals, otters, whales etc- takes me back to Alaska’s wildlife so beautiful like you’ve never seen- the bald headed eagles as well- the seaside being close and relaxing or having a meal on the whayside - nothing can compare to such a feelingbif freedom- love the atmosphere u created with wildlife and the calamari- just wonderful and oh so real and inviting- love it🌹
