Stench Drench

Stench Drench

A Poem by barleygirl
"

living in the boondocks . . .

"

A shiny black beetle assails the nose
tainting any unsullied breeze that blows
a distinctive pointy-butt-upwards pose
heralds a stench to drench the meadows.

Enjoying springtime in my riverside shack
now’s the time to slash the wilderness back
otherwise the forestry starts talking smack
so I do my duty: all the weeds I must whack.

Wild growth so lofty I often lose my pup
it’s time to crank the old weedwhacker up
the twirling strings fling bits of buttercup
atomizing and spewing the dew that piles up.

Way down deep in tall grass so green
stinkbugs congregate in the depths unseen
pulverizing putrid pests with my machine
I’m splattered with specks and reeking so mean.

I liked the photo. I haven't seen a black beetle in many years here in Michigan. Stinkbugs. In my youth we searched for them. I liked the photo and the story told in the poem dear Margie. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

Stingbugs, A odd bug. I enjoyed this tale dear Margie.
Oh those horrible bugs! You are a true pioneer woman Margie, clearing the land and braving the bugs hourself. And your unbridled vitality and sense of humor win the day! Again a poem that is a marvel in form, cadence and rhyme with wild imagery that rocks! “Wild growth so lofty I often lose my pup”- wow- the untamed West is heaven for dogs. And you SO deserve champagne, chocolate and fragrant strawberry bubbles after all that work! ((You & pups)) xo

Fortunately, we don't have stinkbugs in England, .....but we do have nocturnal cats . What "calling cards", we don't find our strimmer will , so 'odifera depositus' is one of the least attractive botanical features in our garden. So I shall not try to emulate your poetic evaluation of its qualities **wink!**
PS We have two bird baths . How should I create the bubbles???

Surprising how something so small can cause such havoc. A good little slice of life...or should I say...a gooey slice of life?

A good write, Bgirl.

I'm glad we don't have to contend with stinkbugs here. But I can well empathise with the mechanical vanquishing of rampant green things. Considering astro-turfing our front lawn if it wasn't for the soak-up drainage benefits our moss-laced grass affords as it slopes down toward our front door.

I love the humorous undertone of this! The rhyming pattern kept with message of the poem. It seems as though the bothersome task is familiar and necessary while living in the more rural areas (trust me I've lived in the boondocks before!). I like how you level the cumbersome and calm experiences of living in your riverside oasis. Great read!

LAUGHING SOOOOO! What a brilliant poem, dear you Tis wonderfully rythmic, graphic language, use of words: pup, up, buttercup, up - reads like a drumbeat! Would suggest a self-administered-anti-speck-pulverising pretty-pink-garden hose. Ten gold stars for such fun and so clevrly achieved, as ever always. xxxx.

Although the title left little to one's imagination, I was nevertheless surprised by your fanciful delivery and artistic flair. Always a pleasure, Margie!
