Savanna Scramble

Savanna Scramble

A Poem by barleygirl
"

dedicated to Emmajoy . . .

"

My shady lady with pink cheeks and freckles
dons safari garb with camouflage speckles
blond curls captured in bonobo bandanna
Suzie sways me to survey the savanna
a cheeky idea so I holler: what the heck?
we leap into her jeep (it’s a rumbling wreck)
wail down a trail in pursuit of beastly brutes
touring a lush grove with figs and fruits
six swerves into our swaying safari quest
we watch as water buffalo romp and rest
suddenly a swarm of bungling baboons
considers our sunroof a suitable spittoon
sure to ditch ‘em Suzie tromps on the throttle
mad momma meerkat robs my water bottle
alongside a mudhole it’s time for another stop
there’s a hedgehog hoedown and a hippo hop
two giraffes whack their mating gyrations
fire up the jeep to seek a sheltered location
gradually untangling from gazelle gridlock
Suzie squawks when she spies a rhino rock
never imagined such a vast bulk could wiggle
gliding snake snickers at zebra’s girly giggle
slowly the glowing orb kindles a sea of pink
as wildebeest gather ‘round a swampy drink
amused by the hilarity of a pack of hyenas
impalas prance around like nimble ballerinas
twilight prods crocodiles to cavort and caper
beneath crepe paper wisps of water vapor
elephants honk and bonk their free-for-all
as warthogs do the watusi within a waterfall
stealthy cheetahs challenge a mongoose muck-up
our pulses throb at how near a lion snuck up
a shrew gives a shiver at an aardvark so droopy
ostriches boogey because Susie’s gone loopy
serving sable sandwiches at a leopard picnic
scarfing scraps the inevitable vulture sidekick
a fitting conclusion to Suzie’s jungle joyride
we squirm into her sleeping bag side-by-side.

Yes we do! Emma is the wonderful Fairy Princess on this site, loved and revered by all. She floats and flies and weaves words into gold. Beautiful, ethereal, compassionate, kind, loving, with a touch of the sprite about her. She is one in a million and her poetry is always magnificent. I feel so lucky to have friends like you and she, Margie. You are Earth, and Emma is Sun. This poem is a high-speed rollicking tribute too her. So cool - I can see you both, long hair flying and both pink-cheeked and freckled, rolling down the Savanna in that “rumbling wreck”, driving through a Noah's Ark of fanciful beasts. Are Lola and Paloma with you? Love the Girl Safari described in wondrous rhyme, alliteration and vivid imagery. It just explodes into sound, scent, movement, color. Wait- I see the warthogs doing the watusi in a waterfall-Whaaaat? Only you could write an amazing tribute like this Margie. Blessings & (((Hugs))) from me and Pebbles too.! Xo :)))))

I’m not sure about Emmajoy but I will be certain to look now. As for this, wowee! Such pizazz! It reminded me of Animalia, It’s a kids book but plenty in there for the grown ups too. Thanks for putting a smile on my dial xx

This is all that Peyote Paul's doing ... one trip on Paul's rocket ship and now all your want is go on magical journeys with a wonderful friend. Savanna Scramble would make a wonderful animated movie rivaling Lion King. You painted an adventure here that is a masterpiece from every angle, with a so much action packed sequences. Great writing Margie querida.

What a great tribute to a very deserving woman. She has been the glue here for as long as I can remember. The pitter pat of her poetic feet offering up fun, romance, and seriousness wrapped in a lesson that we know we should take to heart the moment we read it. This was light and fun and such a great adventure, glad you all made it back to the sleeping bag without getting eaten by the critters. Great job!!!

My luverly friend (you were almost fried again!) THANK YOU for such a wonderfully happy, crazy tribute! if I had to choose between garlands of flowers or expensive perfume...I 'd choose this any day. A good laugh, giggling, smiling should be motto and rule for each and every day and this clever as clever craziness is brilliant! So very welcome by not just me but everyone who reads it.

A light-hearted homage to a creative WC poetess artist of the highest calibre! An exhausting continuous write if I didn't stop to breath as I read … also - sounds like a great safari adventure (Unless camping at Jurassic Park) - bless :-)

I don't know who are you talking about in the first sentence but the rest of poem is quite hilarious because it is deep and impactful but it deludes you into believing that it is like a nursery rhyme. Fantastic Job. That's why I adore you as an literary artist and respect you as a critic.

What a delightful ride you took us on and all dedicated to a wonderful girl, Emma! The rhyming and alliteration were splendid. I want to go to the leopard picnic. I think we should put raisins in the peanut butter to make it look spotted like a leopard! :) Truly fun! Lydi**
